A new Facebook application has taken Mafia Wars-type game play to a new level.
Al-Qaeda Wars is the first Facebook application offered from Rage On Gaming. The title allows participants to play as either a counter terrorist or a terrorist, and target various, slightly misnamed American celebrities when playing as the latter.
Crispy Gamer notes that:
The end goal is to complete missions, build a global network and participate in special mission that depict the total destruction or protection of famous landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Taj Mahal, and the Sphinx.
The article’s author opines that players “may find the depiction of terrorists as highly offensive because they seem to be exclusively of Middle Eastern descent."
Does this strike GP readers as crossing any lines or not that big of a deal, just another game?

Strikes me as a good way, if you choose the terrorist role, to get your name on Homeland Security's Suspect Person List.
They can cross as many lines as they want, it'll just act like an open flame to attract those with strong opinions on the matter. "The newest scourge to the American people: 'Al-Qaeda Wars' !"
Sounds like a Fox News "scandal" in the making.
This was actually made by a Fox news producer.
So Counter-Strike come to Facebook! (Lets be honest that's all it really is, despite what anyone says) I'm off to check it out right now! (As a terrorist, naturally.)
EDIT: Here's the opening paragraph after choosing your side: (click and drag to view, can't seem to get it to show normally.)

I don't have time to look at it in any more detail tonight, but it seems to be standard Mafia Wars style. I'll post some more details sometime tomorrow if no-one else has in the meantime.

Bah. I don't feel I owe Al-Qaeda any undue courtesy. As it is I'm trying hard to stay open minded about islam in general, but all I ever hear day in and day out what terrible people we are, how they will bring wrath to the infidels! Apparently wrath consists of either popping off rockets with no idea what they'll actually hit or suicide bombs. If they'd stop killing each other and everyone else who disagrees with them for five seconds... (sigh).
Anyway, my point is I don't feel the need to avoid disrespecting an organization that, given its druthers, would probably have me dead.
Maybe if it were like, Islam wars, where you levelled up by killing mohammed over and over again. Something that unfairly generalizes. I have yet to see any real compelling any evidence that anyone anywhere in Al-Qaeda is anything even remotely resembling moderate. Near as I can tell there's no proof that they're all a bunch of raving nutjobs.
Well for one, I completed the training mission without actually knowing what was goin on. I was driving around on a big grey plane with little spurts of grass popping up on the sides of the mission pane.
I think I am done with the game now.
Edit: After playing just a little bit more, the game is almost exactly like Mafia Wars and is not worth the effort to play.

Lack of originality is big in the Facebook game apps. Someone found a formula that interested people and out rolled the clones. Some are actually adding a few bells and whistles, but the overall formula is the same.
I'm almost done with New York in Mafia Wars and I've just made Lieutenant General in Castle Age, so starting a new game isn't really interesting me. This one doesn't sound worthwhile to me.

It isn't worthwhile beyond the whole ZOMG AL QAEDA thing. It's not even a GOOD clone! (No energy refill at level up, bullshit I say!)

Looked at it myself - using google maps to portray real locations and actual addresses shook me out of it. I'm not really into the whole JT "figurative" scene.
I don't think they went far enough. If they want to make some real attention getting stuff they should call Fox terrorist supporters and have gameplay where you get money from them. Then have sections where conservatives fund you to deal with other leaders. Throw in some christianity references too. I'm sure there would be some news story about how it would be the next "Make your children killers" game.

Just a game...if you are offended then you should be even more offended at what happens in REAL LIFE!!!!!
There was a time when you heard the word "terrorist" and the bad guys in Die Hard came to mind.
Well, it's called AL-QAEDA wars. Which is a group...made up of lots of middle eastern people.
If it was just "Generic Terrorists" Wars...then I could see a problem. Perpetuating the stereotype that terrorists = middle eastern people would certainly be a problem.
While Al-Qaeda is made of lots of Middle Eastern people, it isn't exclusively so. There's that fat, white, American guy from Orange County, California.
"American." How did he get in with that particular weight on him? Lol. (slightly /sarcasm)

Remember kids, it's not ok to portray terrorists of a Middle Eastern organization as Middle Easterners, but it IS ok to virtually blow up landmarks and ostensibly kill civilians. We must have our priorities!
Jack Thompson...says that this game needs to be banned to save the children in...3..2
Never underestimate the power of idiots in large amounts.
In all fairness, you'd REALLY have to try in order to get offended by this, it's a bit kak. (Almost complete Mafia Wars clone.) The "Jihad" missions are locked to me at the moment, but this one down the list caught my eye:
Payout: $500,000
Experience: 30
Skill Points: 1
