Spore Evolving to Big Screen

October 2, 2009 -

DRM issues shouldn’t affect the Will Wright-designed Spore videogame in its feature film incarnation.

Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has acquired film rights to the Electronic Arts title, with plans to make a computer-generated animated motion picture. Ice Age and Robots director Chris Wedge is aligned with the project, while EA Entertainment’s Patrick O’Brien and Maxis VP Lucy Bradshaw will serve as executive producers.

Other EA properties currently being adapted to film include The Sims, Army of Two, Dante’s Inferno, Dead Space and Mass Effect.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

It would be pretty funny is the film held intrusive DRM that prevented you from watching the movie when you want

But then again rootkits and DRM in Videos and CDs are looked at more heavily since more people with more sway have the ears of our Congressmen

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Really?  You guys can't figure out how they'll do this?  It's simple.

1. Make a trailer.

2. Make another trailer in which everything is drastically changed.

3. Offer an 'Extended Cut' version of the trailer for a price.

4. Allow people to send in clips of their home movies.

5. Copyright homemovie clips and add to movie.

6. Hype movie.

7. Hype more.

8. MOAR!

9. WHAT PART OF MOAR DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND!?

10.  Enough hype!?  No such thing!

11. Throw something together at the last minute and then produce thirty or so sequels.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Attention Hollywood: Just because a game is popular or good, does not mean it would make a great movie.

I hope they learn this before they make LittleBigPlanet into a movie (shudder).

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Why would they make a movie on a story loosely based on the poem and not the actual poem itself? The poem would not translate into much of a game so I can see EA wanting to change the story, however I think it could've been a great film, so why not make it on the actual poem? The poem's been public domain for eons now so you wouldn't have to pay licensing fees.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Because Average Joe is an idiot and a cultural hack. They'd see a movie based on a game, because the game is "cool"; but a movie based on a 'poem' is "not cool".

The poem would make a way better movie.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

I was under the impression that the reason properties like this get bought up was to deprive others of using the ip. Like, since Fox has bought the movie rights to Spore it will make it that much more difficult for others to use the ip for anything.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Dante's Inferno is getting a movie adaptation? It isn't even out yet!!!!

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Hollywood is basically the Black Plague for any good IPs it absorbs. And considering all Hollywood does now is adapt, you're looking at a Black Hole specifically meant for anything that was once good.

I still hate that "fans" are too small a margin to stop all these adaptations. Its been blown WAY out of proportion. I hate to reuse something I already said, but you give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

World of Warcraft and Prototype are also on the movie license list. And lets not forget Jake Gyllenhall's Prince of Persia (who apparently has a name in the movie. i hate you jake.)

Maybe we should stop enjoying things, because of the disappointment you'll inevitably feel when it becomes a movie.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

How the hell can you turn Spore into a movie? Stop making nonsensical spinoffs, EA.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

You know, saying that is the same as asking gravity to not pull things down.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

... HOW?!

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Somebody licensed Dante's Inferno from EA when the original work is in the public domain? Why?

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Does the game specifically follow the book? No. it has it's own characters, graphics, names, places. While it shares common elements, it's not a 100% recreation of the book.

Therefor it is it's own license. It would appear someone wants to make a movie from the game, not the book.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

I hope, the movie is faithful to the game's plot and characters!

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Yup. Which means we will have four mini-films (about same level of quality as those pixar short animations) followed by the main feature that takes place out in space.

Seriously though, as Spore did not have any real plot (same deal with the Sims as the player develops their own plot/story for their characters), I don't see this materializing into anything meaningful. On the other hand, Dead Space and Mass Effect are better choices for films in my opinion. Mass Effect would certainly have an awesome soundtrack just like the game (80's sci-fi).

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Actually, spore not having any real plot might help the movie... Most video games films fail because they either don't follow the original story, or they make some attempt to do so, but then end up failing to do it any justice (amongst other reasons); frankly, i can see dead space turning out like doom... for spore, with no prexisting story, there is nothing that the directors can actually screw up... they can be as original as they want to be. Writing the story for "spore" will be just like writing the story for an original animated film; just with a spore theme to it

Not to mention that one of thing that Spore will have going for it is the fact that its a CG animated film... most past attempts at video game movies were mature themed games made in live action; as such they were taken much more seriously... and i use the term "seriously" very loosely as directors can translate that and take the micheal bay approach to film making and think all you need is guns, tits, and explosions to sell the film to an adult audience (which it pains me to admit that they are sometimes right)... in contrast, all spore really has to do is make us laugh, which is something they may be able to do with the director of ice age on the case... being "meaningful" would be nice though, as its the emotional moments that make pixar films truly beloved and memorable...

There's some potential here... but that could be said for a lot of game based off of films

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Having not played Mass Effect, I can't give an opinion on it becoming a movie. But Army of Two would work really well if done right, since the game was basically your average action movie fare in interactive form. Dead Space would also have a good shot at being a good movie too. For the most part, the story of the game plays out like the original Alien, but with a twist or two here and there. If they got Ridley Scott to direct it, you could almost be guaranteed that it would be a blockbuster.

But I don't know if Ridley would do it since in the past he's made statements about not wanting to go back to Sci-Fi out of the fear that people will only associate him with it and nothing else. But he may have changed his mind since he's gotten a stable of decidedly non-sci-fi movies under his belt, and most have them have been astounding(Black Hawk Down, Hannibal, American Gangster, Gladiator).

Aside from the "how?!" question, I wonder if Uwe will have a hand in this.

Re: Spore Evolving to Big Screen

Well, a while back i read that some movie company had acquired the movie rights to Asteroid (yes, that little game where you control a triangle spaceship shooting asteroids), so this doesn't seem all that insane in comparison:P

TechnogeekIf the developer were male there wouldn't have been a "conversation" in the first place.10/19/2014 - 2:27am
Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm

MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
