The co-CEO of Quantic Dream has taken the media to task over its presentation of violence in video games, saying that many things are taken out of context, leading to controversy.
Guillaume de Fondaumiere, in a video interview with French game site Digital Games (translated by Benzaie), said that mass media has an important role in forming public opinion, but problems arise when some media "are taking small portions of video game footages out their contexts."
He said that video games are a form of expression and that violence can be found in any form of expression. He disagrees with the notion that violent games make a person violent:
"Playing a violent game won't turn you into a psycho, a murderer or a serial killer. Most studies show that very clearly on the contrary violent games allow players to express themselves. It's like an outlet for them in a way. All these violent actions that are said to have been inspired by playing violent video games are nothing but the expressions of issues unrelated to video games."
De Fondaumiere, who is past president of the French National Video Game Association, said that video games are this generation's form of media that is being targeted for its violence, alluding to the fact that books, movies and music have all had their time when that form of expression was criticized on a regular basis.
He did say that violence in games has its limits:
"Violence must not be glorified. When you are talking to designers of the games we talked about, they'll tell you it's not what they had in mind. Sometimes they'll tell you that they wanted to give players total freedom. That players can totally decide to be violent or not and that in fact, by using violence in the game, usually they will be penalized."
Quantic Dream is developing Heavy Rain for the PS3.

Great video but those ads were annoying with the popping up every minute.
I didn't see them as ads. I saw them as games supposedly representative of video game violence.
Or ads for violent games. Targetted advertising and all that.

I LIKE the fence. I get 2 groups to laugh at then.
I had random videos scroll up and block the video :(
Quantic Dream also developed Omikron, the greatest (aside from the fighting/first person shooting engines) adventure game you never played.
HEY I played (and finished) Omikron
With the Wii making more people become gamers, in a casual sense, they will start to understand the fun and enjoyable side of gaming that we have all known for a long time.
And there will always be people who will always hate videogames so much that they want to bash it using their mediums like TV and Radio.
But they will never understand because they don't even try to play videogames.
When people say that this game promotes violence, I'd say that this game is talking about violence.
When people say that people who play videogames allot are addicted to videogames, I'd say that people who play videogames allot have a passion for videogames.
thanks for the info. I am sure to use that sometime in my own arguments.
On your first point, I think it's just fantasy to think the moms playing Wii will play anything besides every iteration of Wii Sports and Wii Fit. I don't think that mom is going to go "I enjoyed Wii Sports Resort, let me try Assassins Creed II!" It's unfortnate, but this isn't likely to happen.
Point 2, yes, you're right. But those people are all 70 yr old politicians. All the problems caused by them will be gone in 15 years when they're all retired or dead. It's going to be the greatest day in history when that last politician retires/dies.
You're last point is completely true and logical. Someone whose hobby is re-creating battle scenes from historical wars wouldn't get any hate for spending large portions of their time doing it. Every entertainment medium had it's time in the limelight for all the hate, it's just video games turn.
I didn't notice what the media was doing until he pointed it out in this video & what he said about taking the violent parts out of a game & saying it's violent. That is wrong to do. I agree w/Frenchie, it is a passion. I have loved this passion all throughout my life ever since I could pick up & play SNES.
