Congress OKs $30M in Anti-Piracy Resources

December 16, 2009

The funds include $20.0 million in state and local grants to further the use of high technology in order to thwart Internet piracy, $8.0 million for the FBI to use to hire new agents and $2.0 million for Department of Justice IP prosecutions.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the funds were authorized under last year’s Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act. The bill, designed to “enhance remedies for violations of intellectual property laws, and for other purposes,” was signed into law by President Bush on October 13, 2008.

Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) Chairman and CEO Dan Glickman was pleased with the new funds, saying, “Congress took a major step forward by providing $30 million in funding for new FBI agents, federal prosecutors, and local and state law enforcement grants to protect American jobs and creativity by cracking down on the theft of movies and other intellectual property.”

The story also details a sting operation called Operation Holiday Hoax, a six-day sting that targeted vendors selling illegal goods in 41 U.S. cities, which resulted in the seizing of 700,000 counterfeit and pirated goods, worth over $26.0 million. 272 tons of counterfeit goods were also snatched in Mexico.

I can't help but have cynical thoughts about this crap.

I once had a dream about God. In it, he was looking down upon the planet and the havoc we recked and he said unto us, "Damn Kids get off my lawn!"

Re: Congress OKs $30M in Anti-Piracy Resources

Man $30 Million could have really done some good with something a little more important like hunger, homelessness, child abuse, etc. and it really could have helped the M/RIAA in their public relations fiasco if they applied these fund to something truly pertinent.

Way to fight the important battles there M/RIAA. (vomit)

Are the M/RIAA ever going to stop beating this long dead horse and revise their business model? There is obvious money to be made by changing their model, why can't they see that? $30 Million could have been better spent having a "think tank" come up with a better business model. That at least would have a better return on inventment then just throwing the money away like they are here.

Re: Congress OKs $30M in Anti-Piracy Resources

That's a lot of money flushed down the toilet. They should spend it on the public schooling system or something.

Re: Congress OKs $30M in Anti-Piracy Resources

Believe it or not, Zip, these are the type of people piracy investigations usually go after.

DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm
