Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

December 22, 2009 -

In deference to games from the same genre as RapeLay, a title so controversial even the United Nations urged it be banned, a new Japanese erotic game sends up Japanese restrictions on games that contain content simulating forced sex.

Shinobiryuu, a Softhouse developed PC game of the eroge variety, revolves around several Japanese warrior clans that end up having consensual sex with members of the opposite sex, as described by the website Canned Dogs. The consensual part of the description is key, especially in light of a ban of games featuring rape by Japan’s Ethics Organization of Computer Software (EOCS).

Before even beginning Shinobiryuu, users are presented with the following declaration:

This is a declaration made with the consensus of all the characters that appear in this story.

All the characters appearing in this game have gone through special training and all actions carried out are done on the basis of mutual agreement.

Even if you’re a inhuman person who believes that fictional characters in creative works do not have human rights, please do not ignore this.

We also thank all the kind people who see a character in the story saying phrases such as “help me” and take it as a real call for help.

However, even though you are worrying for the characters in the story, these are all lines spoken from a script.

They are not saying all this from the bottom of their hearts. We are sorry that they have put in so much effort into their acting that some people will confuse it as something that is really happening.

This game is a fictional story.

Canned Dogs also has some sample character dialogue from Shinobiryuu that has a little fun with the topic. Head over to their website to read the translation.

THIS game, the one being talked about in the article, is not Rapelay.

Re: Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

Frankly, anyone who's getting their rocks off to a few polygons and some shaders has far bigger issues anyway. They kind of remind me of TNG's Mr Barclay in the Holodeck...

Re: Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

I'm pretty sure Barclay didn't become the 24th century version of a WoW addict until the later years of Voyager.

Re: Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

Well, it all sort of blended together, I suppose I should have said 'Barclay from TNG', rather than in, but nonetheless, yes, my feelings are along those lines, that the existence of this software whilst not, in my belief, dangerous as such, is indicative of a larger problem with regards to socialising and inter-communicating in Japan. Possibly that is enforced due to the nature of life in Japan, which leaves little room for privacy or family life.

Either way, I find the need for such software more disconcerting than the existence of it. As I said above, both sides are kind of guilty of the same crime, of humanising the characters in the game. There's an interesting case recently of a Japanese 'Otaku' who married his Sim-date. Now, I'm not suggesting it's the 'norm' in that culture, but it does set alarm bells ringing for me.

- Link to News article on the marriage. Once again, certainly not the norm, but possibly an indication of a problem that is nothing to do with Computer Games, but merely providing a niche for them.

Although Reginald did show the personality traits that would make him a failure at life later on during TNG. "The Nth Degree" is my favorite episode featuring his exploits.

Re: Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

anyone who finds the pixels in a porn movie or the arrangement of ink in a magazine or a few photons from looking at someone has far bigger issues

oh wait, they are all reductio ad absurdum arguments

on topic though I am still in favour of rape games not being banned, rape fantasy is quite common, especially between 2 consenting adults. what this is is a case of "ewww BAN!" just like when people hear about gay people getting married they go "ewww BAN!" just because they don't like or understand it and don't want to understand it they think it should just go away

disclaimer: I am neither gay or into rape fantasy, I just am intollerant of intollerance, I have no vested interest in these issues being progressed other then the betterment of society and the human race, the sooner we look to understand rather then blame, the better

Re: Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

Hardly, you are making the same mistake as the people decrying the games, substituting real people for a group of polygons. Photo's and Movies are not animations, whereas a computer generated scene or, indeed, a drawn scene are.

If people want to look at those picture, and this isn't about the subject matter, whether they be anything from hardcore porn to 'erotica' isn't important, it's not my problem, but stimulation from actual physical images of humans interacting makes far more sense to me than stimulation from drawn or animated scenes.

I'm perfectly willing to accept that people do get their rocks off, but people that prefer to interact with a computer than the opposite sex cause more concern in me than people who like looking at pornographic photos or movies.

Unless, of course, I am no longer allowed an opinion in the matter?

Re: Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

Couldnt have put it better myself. Its been an ongoing problem in society for centuries, where the strange, taboo, or misunderstood are given such a stigma that it is ostrasized to a rediculous level. Im not saying rape is good, and im not exactly in favor of rape simulations (albeit most are flash games), but that is no reason to ban the ficitonal media from public eye. As long as they are able to tell that what happens in the game/video is not socially acceptable from a real person, there should be absolutely no trouble. However, this is only on the fictional level for this as real rape is illegal to be viewed for personal reasons (as far as i understand).

Re: Erotic Japanese Title Lampoons Rape Game Ban

Yes but some or most women would take offense to do this that have literally, seriuosly been raped in their life against their will. & to some men too that would feel offended as well that yes, have been raped in a bad way. (Which can happen to men.) I wouldn't buy the game, b/c for personal reasons that have happened in my life. Or a woman in the game saying "help me." Not for me. I wouldn't ban it, but I wouldn't buy it either. I would ignore it.

MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
Andrew EisenInteresting read. Unfortunately, too vague to form an opinion on but at least now I know what faefrost was talking about in James' editorial.10/19/2014 - 10:39pm

Neo_DrKefkaOnly good thing I seen come out of the Biddle incident was the fact a professional fighter offered to give 10k to an anti bullying charity for a round in the ring with Biddle.10/19/2014 - 7:49pm

Neo_DrKefkaI believe the problem #GamerGate has with Sam Biddle is he is apart of this blogging group that in a way hates or detests its readers. Also being apart of the crowd that claims its on the right side of history isn't helping when he is advocating bullying10/19/2014 - 7:45pm
MechaTama31Of course, I'm looking at these tweets in isolation, I don't know a thing about the guy.10/19/2014 - 7:06pm
MechaTama31If anything, the sarcastic implication seems to be that the SJW crowd is bringing back the bullying of nerds. But it's the GGers who are out for his blood? I'm lost...10/19/2014 - 7:01pm
MechaTama31I don't really get this Sam Biddle thing. The reaction to his tweets seems to be taking them at face value, but... they're tongue in cheek. Right?10/19/2014 - 7:00pm
