Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off the Hook”

February 17, 2010 -

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) kicks off tomorrow in Washington D.C. and organizers of the event are turning to videogames and hip-hop in an attempt to ramp up the event’s attraction to a younger audience.

Fox News reports that videogames will be featured in a room called the XPAC Lounge, or as one event organizer termed it, the “hub of fun.” The lounge was the brain-child of radio host Kevin McCullough and actor Stephen Baldwin.

Ten videogame stations will be featured in all, offering attendees the chance to play games such as Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution and Call of Duty.

The XPAC Lounge will also be home to a late night “rap/jam” session on Thursday night. The article questions the viability of such a function in light of Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele’s (pictured) failed past attempts at interjecting hip-hop culture into conservative principals. Steele previously published a blog entitled “What Up?” that he eventually killed in reaction to ridicule of the name and he also reportedly once described a GOP public relations initiative as “off the hook.”

CPAC Director Lisa De Pasquale seemed to think that “the energy” is flowing more towards conservative candidates right now, adding, “To be a rebel on campus, you have to be a conservative."

5,000 people are pre-registered for the conference, 61.0 percent of whom are students.

I'm sorry, but 'conservative' and anything cool - or even geeky-cool do not work together. It reminds me of the conservative folks during the '80s who wanted to associate themselves with Punk - it just ain't gonna work.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Also, I find that conservatives have no sense of humor.

"Hub of Fun"..... Really??

Is the RNC THIS desperate to bring youngsters to their conventions that they are now offering video games? What's next? Free candy??

You know when I hear this I can only think of one thing.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Well, when the median age of the Conservative Party is somewhere between 45 and 50, it seems you've got a problem with the younger folks.

The Republican Party isn't faring well among 18-24 year olds, and they see that as something they need to fix, I guess. However, the phrasology they are using is probably just going to get them laughed at.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

It is seeing things like this that make it hard for me to be a republican.  First the Neo-cons and the theo-cons, then Glenn Beck, then the neo-cons corrupting the Ron Paul movement into the tea party movement and now this where the CPAC keynote speaker is Glenn Beck.

Seriously Steele and GOP, hands off the issue of video games.  That bridge has been burned a long time ago(same with democrats) and you don't use video games to the people who are so hardcore that they are going to attend your conference anyway.  The convention is meant to be about the politics and adding this layer to try and attract more people just because they like video games is decietful.

If the GOP wants to get any respect it has to be professional and having a blog like "what up" and trying to include video games where the party has been consistently against the video game industry is just plain hypocritical.  What the people expect from this convention is concrete policy to solve the country's problems.

I already have a hard enough time convincing people that net neutrality is a very conservative principle that we must preserve through the FCC. But these aren't the policies that I want to see turned into a political football like terrorism, or the war on drugs.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Sadly politicis these days is less about serving the peopel and more about doing al lyou can to keep that cushy job.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Well, that's their job after all. People who do well get to keep their jobs while those who don't lose them. They keep orlose their jobs based on how many people vote for them. Hence, their primary job is to get vote, nothing else... Sadly.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

If you want to have a room of fun, keep Stephen Baldwin out of it. He will literally drain it of all fun and potential fun.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Look at that. Not all conservatives are censor-happy, anti-gaming nutjobs. I knew it.

"The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits." -Albert Einstein

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Actually this is just the case of the conservatives realizing that young adults actually do vote and that they'll need those votes later this year. This isn't about video games at all, it's about pandering to voters.

Politicians, of any group, will say and do ANYTHING if it means getting them votes, including trying to 'save the children' from video games while at the same time trying to win over younger voters with video games... and sad attempts to connect with them though out dated phases like "what up" and "off the hook"...

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Yeah individuals who are in essence conservative aren't all censor-happy. However politicians have made their career in politics essentially being against pop-culture and targetting those who do vote by the constant demonization and censorship of the video game industry.

This is literally at worst saying to a group of kids that you have candy in your van and all you have to do is get in.  They bait them in with something they like and then want them to guilt themselves into staying and buying into the agenda.  I'm sorry but while video games is about socializing I could not stand hearing Glenn Beck or Micheal Steele talk about video games when they have been against video games for years.

Also the GOP has been against net neutrality for a long time because it disturbs the "free market" principles of corporations. Nevermind the outrage they generate when a school shooting happens or a game like Rapelay is imported into a country that was never meant to have it or a "sex scene" that is nothing but heavy petting is shown.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Glenn Beck and the like are nothing more than the worst of the conservatives. Never hold it against the majority for the stupid acts of a few who try to look like part of the majority.

On a college campus?  You bet your ass it is.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Would this be the same video games and rap that conservatives claim murders babies and rapes the blind?

Looks like Obama isn't the only hypocrite when it comes to using games to try and get "home with the downies, canine"

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

I don't really understand how Obama is a hypocrite when it comes to games.  His only mention is to balance media consumption and to turn off "the tv, xbox, etc" every now and then.  Something I agree with.  I play a lot of games, but realize that sitting in front of my tv 8 hours a night is probably not healthy.

He has admitted to buying and playing Wii with his family.  Please... tell me how this is the same as saying "games are poisoning our youth" and then turning around and trying to use them to gain support among young voters.

Re: Conservative Conference Adds Games, Hopes to be “Off ...

Replace "games are poisoning are youth" with "games are one of the reasons our youths are stupid and fat" after using those very same games to try and draw voters from the voting-age gamer demographic and you get Obama.

Ah, he was the one who was adamant that there was a graphic sex scene in Mass Effect, ok.

I'll bet he wants to tell anyone i nthe game room why what they're doing is wrong, or they're only saying there's going ot be a game room to attract younger people, when i nfact there isn't one.

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
