Gamers4Croydon Fills Out Slate of Candidates

March 9, 2010 -

Gamers4Croydon, the Australian political party formed with the goal of knocking incumbent South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson out of office, recently revealed a handful of new candidates.

Kat Nicholson, the group’s candidate for Croydon, and Gamers4Croydon President Chris Prior, who is running for Legislative Council, were the first two candidates to emerge from the group, back in January of this year.

The latest political hopefuls to be unveiled include:

  • Tom Birdseye – Candidate for Adelaide and Deputy Treasurer of Gamers4Croydon. A Mechatronic Engineer, Tom is described as “an advocate for parental responsibility, government transparency, and common sense legislation ahead of vested interests.”
  • David Egge – Candidate for Norwood and Deputy President of Gamers4Croydon. Egge is an R&D Engineer and believes in “accountability, responsibility, liberty, and putting people before politics.”
  • Matt Allpress – Candidate for Light and Deputy Registered Officer of Gamers4Croydon. Allpress is owner of an IT consultancy group.
  • Ben Ernst – Candidate for Mawson and a Civil Engineer and Software Developer. Ernst hopes “that his future children deserve to grow up in an Australia where they can be assured of their freedoms, where legislation is sensible and where government serves the people.”

The group’s policy section also appears to have recently been filled out. Among the measures Gamers4Croydon supports are: opposition to mandatory Internet filtering, a ban on political advertising that uses public funds, a repeal of legislation that restricts the display of R18+ DVDs and marriage equality.

Gamers4Croydon also supports measures that would make it illegal for politicians to “lie about matters of public importance.” To that end the group stated:

Your freedom of choice is being eroded each and every time a politician lies, bends the truth or is creative with the facts. Politicians need to be judged on what they can deliver, not the tales they can tell. Legislation to punish politicians for deceiving the public would go a long way toward making that a reality.

Does it sound like they are referring to anyone in particular?

Thanks Ryan!

Re: Gamers4Croydon Fills Out Slate of Candidates

Now if only they would change their name to something more appropriate for a political party.

I'd love to support this party, although since I'm not a citizen I can't vote, and so would my wife who is.. but how can someone take a party seriously when they call themselves Gamers4Croydon?

No different from the Christian Democrate Party down here, I see Gamers4Croydon and wonder if they are able to see past their own demographic, even if their policies clearly show they are... if I, as an informed person for whom Gaming is a passion, ask this.. what of the average voter?

Allied with such parties as the Sex Party and Pirate Party, they will not be taken seriously, even if they are promoting serious, freedom based, issues. Instead they will be viewed as wackjobs like their allies.. and who can really blame them?

Referring to anyone in particular?  No, that whole thing seems to apply pretty well to politicians as a whole.

Re: Gamers4Croydon Fills Out Slate of Candidates

Fighting against the Internet Filter...check.

Trying to change the system that currently requires all Attorney Generals to Agree on something even though not everyone will agree to it in order to pass legislation on a state by state basis (Hey, this is the only thing I think it would work if not every AG would agree on something)... check.

Repeal against the new laws on R18+ rated DVDs... double check.

Marridge Equality... check.

I will be voting for these guys because of their AWESOMENESS!!!!

Even though I want to leave Australia in order to live in Canada or Japan in the future, if Australia is able to become a bit more freer and better country that supports those who love to play Videogames no matter the violence or sexual content, those who support freedom of the internet to be able to enjoy the things that you can't get in Australia itself, those who enjoy Adult movies and DVDs as well as those who are homosexuals and want to have equal right to marry someone that they love...well this is the best political party I can vote for...

If I leave this country with this sort of political party in power in the sennate, then I can leave Australia as a happy man knowing my land is NOW a free country even for minority groups.

However I think their quote for legislation against politicians who blatantly tell lies or sensationalize the information they tell to the community will be nothing more than wishful thinking, but I would like to see how many politicians who are currently in power would be pissing their pants at the thought of most minorioty parties proposing the same sort of legislation against them.

Yeah, won't work.  After all, Atkinson will just pull a FOX News (already he's used FOX New's "Fair and Balanced" argument in wanting to mislead the public regarding the violent video games issue) and claim that lying and deceiving the general public is protected by Freedom of Expression.  Which is made even more hilarious in that he doesn't support Freedom of Expression to begin with.

Re: Gamers4Croydon Fills Out Slate of Candidates

The only way to tell if a politician is lying right now is to see if their lips are moving.  Don't remove that fundamental truth through legislation.  We won't know whether to believe them or not.  Right now, we can at least count on them to be lying.  Anything done to change this behavior will just add uncertainty.

Re: Gamers4Croydon Fills Out Slate of Candidates

And Atkinson's smear campaign budget just quadrupled

Ouch. And what have Mr. Atkinson to say for his defense?

I thought so. They also should punish politicians who can´t take public criticism and overreact like a 11 years olds on Youtube because people is calling them by mean names. Also they should punish him for not going with a dentist.

TechnogeekIf the developer were male there wouldn't have been a "conversation" in the first place.10/19/2014 - 2:27am
Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm

MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
