Autodesk Launches Student Training Program

March 11, 2010

Autodesk, creators of software such as the popular 3D modeling software Maya, has announced a free “Vehicle for Games” web-based curriculum that will teach post-secondary students the ins and outs of game development.

Created in conjunction with game developers NCSoft and Double Helix, the curriculum was developed to “mirror the requirements of real-world game development,” and is currently in testing at California’s Laguna College of Art & Design.

The curriculum provides “an art director's point of view for various steps of game development.” An additional description offered:

Students go through the process of modeling and texturing a vehicle for a video game, learning industry techniques. "Vehicle for Games" also provides a taste of what it's like to be an asset modeler working in production. It includes video tutorials, models, textures, concept art, and orthographic drawings that students can follow or use as guides to create their own vehicles with their own concepts.

The service is available on the Autodesk Education Community website, which requires an email address from a registered educational facility for access. The program includes a six-month trial version of Maya and a 30-day trial of the 3D sculpting and texture painting software Mudbox.

Laguna College's Game Art Department Chair Sandy Appleoff added, “Having this masterful curriculum has allowed our students to move faster. By the end of the semester they will have produced game engine-ready assets and have them loaded and functioning in the game engine.”

Re: Autodesk Launches Student Training Program

Awesome, just sent that link to all my classmates.

It's difficult to get good info like this in my school.  None of the teachers have worked on games other than flash based ones (that I know of anyway), and the 3d classes tend to be just 3d in general, rather than focusing on anything.  You kinda have to figure out a lot of those particulars for yourself here, lol.

I haven't had the chance to look at it a whole lot yet, but it seems pretty informative.

Re: Autodesk Launches Student Training Program

I'[ll be sure to look for those programs on Pirate bay. Kidding, piracy is wrong.

cool tank in the pic anyway.

Re: Autodesk Launches Student Training Program

In this context its not that wrong as the market for it itself is made up of professionals students or employs of a studio. The only way to really misuse it is to use it to make something to sell and since most people just want to make neat stuff with the pro apps that are not targeted at the consumer market they are not losing anything over it.....

Re: Autodesk Launches Student Training Program

ZenI felt Brutal Legends was a funny & beautiful look at the world of rock from Double Fines point of view. The only parts I wasn't hot for were the RTS bits as it felt forced. Otherwise fantastic.02/12/2012 - 1:34pm
DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm

GuamishI think it is in good hands. Tim did a game for the GDC award show and that was fun for how short it was.02/10/2012 - 12:22pm
