Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

June 30, 2010 -

In anticipation of next week's release of Crackdown 2, MTV Multiplayer has slapped together "Crackdown 2 Guide to Griefing: How to Make Your Xbox Live Friends Hate You." Of course, you could just continually ask them to join a party while they are trying to watch something important on Netflix like an Akira Kurosawa movie (you know who you are) to accomplish that goal.

The guide features five irritating (from your friends' perspective anyway) activities you can engage in to make people hate you with colorful names like The Alabama Roof Push, The Kalamazoo Car Toss, The Dangling Gift Horse, The Live Orb Snatch 'N Grab, and the The Hangman's Grift. Here's one example:

The Alabama Roof Push
There's a weapon in "Crackdown 2" called the UV Shotgun which unlocks at Guns Level 2. This should be the griefer's best friend. The gun's true purpose is to kill the mutant-like freaks en masse, but shooting non-freaks makes the gun act like a non-lethal force push, sending the target flying 30 feet in the opposite direction. I think you see where I'm going with this.

The Situation: You and a friend spend 10 minutes climbing up a building to get the 4X agility orb on the roof. Because you're better than he is, you make it to the top first.

The Grief: Just as he makes the final jump to get up to the roof, you shoot him in the face with the UV Shotgun.

The Payoff: He goes flying and probably dies from the fall. Fantastic.

You can read them all at MTV Multiplayer. Griefing can be fun as long as you and your friends are both engaged in the activity, so if you are going to try some of these tricks you'd best make sure the people you invite into your games aren't thin-skinned crybabies.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

Bah, these guys know nothing of trolling in games.

Demon's Souls, for example, is something I occassionally troll in. I bring a couple of blue phantoms over to aid me and just when we are about to kill a boss for lots of souls (the XP and currency of the game) I use a spell to ressurect them and rob them off all the souls while claiming them for myself. I get nothing extra for doing so, except the pure satisfaction of nerd rage on the other end of the connection.

Play some online shooters and spam grenade weapons and rockets at your allies trying to defend against enemies. Friendly fire usually isn't in effect for explosive damage.

Keep in mind, I only do this when I have been in a game full of idiots for a while and decide to take sweet revenge on them.

Oh, and stealing all the vehicles you can and parking them in enemy territory and leaving them there is always good for a laugh too.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

I used to park ground transports under bridges or far away from the enemy Titans in BF 2142's Titan maps, and just stay there, if I just needed a good chuckle.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

I agree with weatherlight, this is not why i come to gamepolitics, and i'm getting sick of it.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

While it may be game related, it has nothing to do with politics and best of all it teaching people how to grief of all things. While some of these tricks may be funny if you do it once in a while to friends. This will cause much anger among players and shows just how immature that "gamers" can be.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

Lighten up, nothing wrong with a fun piece like this every once in a while. Besides, it's not like Crackdown has matchmaking, only friends playing with friends. My friends and I routinely screw with each other just like this, it's just good fun. Unless it isn't, in which case, that person probably isn't a good friend.

That said, GP should probably tone it down on the non-politics related articles, as this IS a game/politics website, hence its name.

It is not murder; I am merely advancing the hands of the clock, just a bit.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

The problem is I really don't find Griefing funny. Screwing around with friends as a spur of the moment thing is completely different then going into a game with the purpose of messing with someone.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

Hey, here's some suggestions- laugh and put up with it, or switch to a different server.

Kinda like here. Laugh and put up with it, or get your preferred news elsewhere.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

Seriously.

Could you maybe whine MORE about this? When my local news channel is having a rough news day and focusing on stupid crap like "Old Ladies Having Power Scooter Races", I don't go out of my way to call them up and demand a political or law-related story.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

The wonderful thing about being an online site is that you do not need to publish 10 articles in a day. If its a slow day, you just publish less. News stations on the other hand need to fill a 30 minute spot. If I wanted general news I would go read Yahoo or MSN. If I wanted to read about the latest celebrity gossip I would read TMZ or Eonline. I come here to read about Game Politics, not how to be a dick to your friends and get a cheap laugh.

Greifing is one of the more immature things that gamers do. For a site that hopefully wants to promote informed and responsible gamers that are interested in politics, this I believe this was a very poor choice in an article for this site. And just as I called into the local news station to complain when they decided to spend a 2 hour "bicycle safety special" ramming vehicles into bikes showing how far the manikins flew, I said something here.

Now if that is called whining there have another couple sentences. Glad I could make you happy.

Good for you. Except that even those news outlets will have other filler stories contrary to their usual news output if there's little else to report. But hey, don't let me ruin your fun- if you want to waste time and effort pitching a fit over what you consider to be newsworthy material, you should at least bear in mind that nobody cares.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

I already pointed out that this is a specialized forum as shown by the title which is not like Yahoo or MSN. However if you look at MSN or Yahoos main page the number of articles varies greatly day to day hour to hour.

And yes nobody cares, well except me and possibly someone else but they really dont matter. Now please go hide in your happy world where only your opinion matters and no one else is allowed to express theirs.

Re: Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

Get over yourself. Nothing I've said indicates that you haven't any right to speak your own mind. But if you've got something to say, you might as well be man enough to prepare yourself for opposing criticism.

You must be a killjoy to play alongside in a team deathmatch.

Michael ChandraIf GP goes "EZK, do not talk about X publicly for a week, we're preparing a big article on it" and he still tweets about X, they'd have a legitimate reason to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP tells Andrew "we'd kinda prefer it if you stopped talking about Wii-U for 1 week" and he'd tweet about it anyway, firing him for it would be idiotic.10/20/2014 - 8:51am

MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
