AU Senator: Arcade Games That Offer Prizes Train Kids to Gamble

July 7, 2010 -

Australian Senator—and fervent anti-gambling crusader—Nick Xenophon (pictured) is turning his attention to arcade games that feature gambling elements, saying that such entertainment is a “training ground” for children to learn how to gamble.

Xenophon, who previously took on mobile and PC games based on slot machines (or pokies as they are called Down Under), was joined in his latest contention by Charles Livingstone, a Monash University “electronic gaming expert,” who told the Age that such arcade games achieved a pair of purposes: “to indoctrinate kids to gambling, to make them think this is a normal part of life; and to lure children, and with them their parents, into the pokie venues.”

Calling for action from the federal government, Xenophon stated, “Legislation needs to change because these machines are a training ground for pokies. It puts kids at risk.” He added, “While mum and dad are playing pokies inside, the kids are getting trained on redemption [arcade] games just a few metres away.”

Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group spokesperson David Curry defended the venues, saying, “Quite simply, we operate family venues with a variety of entertainment opportunities for children included within that.”

Thanks Ryan!

Any activity which involves some element of risk which results into a significant gain or loss can be considered gambling.

The thing is, there's a lot of that scattered in all kinds of videogames - from upgrading equipment in an MMO, using a pokeball to capture your pokemon, opening a random item chest, breeding your monsters/pets in game, etc. A lot of game elements are based on chance, some of the more rewarding ones usually involve risking something precious to the gamer to be able to have a chance at getting something more valuable. It's how you keep gamers continually interested and coming back for more.

Xenophon is actually a pretty straight shooter and get's himself well informed when dealing with issues (such as the internet filter) outside his area of expertise.  The guy has a real bone for gambling though but generally he's seen as a positive force on the senate.

Re: AU Senator: Arcade Games That Offer Prizes Train Kids ...

Somehow I gather his definition of this is going to extend to games that give tickets too.

A quick look at Wikipedia's entry on Australian healthcare says they have private insurance companies (in addition to government healthcare).

Just sayin'.

Re: AU Senator: Arcade Games That Offer Prizes Train Kids ...

From what I remember reading, Australia has (or had, it was a while ago) quite a gambling problem. And this makes sense, as chance based games definitely fall into the gambling category.

Re: AU Senator: Arcade Games That Offer Prizes Train Kids ...

There is only 1 game that I've seen that is purely chance and another that has a chance like option to play the game.  Colorama is pretty much Roulette for kids.  Spin to win does have a free spin option, but it is 1 out of the 7 slots on the roll-down section that the ball could end up on (4 of which will move the wheel left or right by 1 or 3 spaces, one of which that will keep the wheel in place, and one will move it to the next Bankrupt on the machine)

Why I feel the urge to bang my head against a wall 20 times? This people need to live in a thrid world country so that way they can know what is it a real social-issue related to children, not fucking co-op games.

Re: AU Senator: Arcade Games That Offer Prizes Train Kids ...

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you are trying to say with that comment. Are you implying they should work on problems like child soldiers? Extreme poverty? High infant mortality rates? Australia focuses on crap like this because they don't have the same social issues as a third world country, and I can guarantee that if not for the recession and the wars in the U.S.A., they would be focusing on shit like this as well.

Re: AU Senator: Arcade Games That Offer Prizes Train Kids ...

If he's going after straight-up chance machines, great, I'm all for it.  But he'd better stay away from Skee-Ball.

Strange thing is, if you go coin-op in Canada, you are generally not allowed to have 'chance' in the first place.  I used to work on arcade games that shipped to canada and we were required to make all the games deterministic.....

prh99Also there is no story in rational and respectful discussion (where you can find it).10/19/2014 - 10:44am
prh99Well they are probably doing it on Twitter and probably the GG hashtag so any voice reason gets drowned out by idiocy. Also it's far easier to broad brush a group.10/19/2014 - 10:41am
Wonderkarpdont fool yourself, Technogeek. Remember Mass Effect 3? How about the ferver against Phil Fish?10/19/2014 - 10:18am
MechaTama31None of which is the fault or responsibility of the people who are not trolling, harassing, threatening, doxxing, etc. So why is their opinion hostage to the people who are?10/19/2014 - 10:06am
TechnogeekIf the developer were male there wouldn't have been a "conversation" in the first place.10/19/2014 - 2:27am
Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm
MaskedPixelantehttp://store.steampowered.com/app/327940/ Night Dive starts charging for freeware.10/18/2014 - 12:21pm
Matthew Wilsonthe sad thing is there are trolls on both sides of this. people need to stop acting like their side is so pure.10/18/2014 - 12:19pm
MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
