Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

September 1, 2010 -

An online videogame backed by the right wing Austrian Freedom Party (FPO), launched in advance of regional elections to be held on September 26, depicts the province of Styria as overrun with mosques and tasks players with stopping further ones from being built.

A Reuters story claims that the “Bye Bye Mosque” game has drawn over 60,000 visitors since Monday, in addition to criticisms from the local Islamic community, Social Democrats and the Green Party. A local Islamic leader named Anas Schakfeh called the game “tasteless and incomprehensible,” adding, “This is religious hatred and xenophobia beyond comparison.”

As the game ends, a message reads, “Styria is full of minarets and mosques. So vote for Dr. Gerhard Kurzmann (pictured) and the Freedom Party on September 26 so that this doesn’t happen.”

In an Austrian Times story, Green Party spokesperson Werner Kogle said, “The FPO chases minarets which don’t exist but doesn’t care about the 40,000 Styrians who currently have no job.”

The Times added this description of Kurzmann:

Kurzmann is considered to be a representative of the FPO’s far-right branch. He has been campaigning against the introduction of English words into everyday German and infuriated political opponents by calling members of the infamous Third Reich Waffen-SS "decent people".

“This is religious hatred and xenophobia beyond comparison.”

I hope he just means beyond comparison to other Austrian politicians.  If not, I mean wow.  This is religious hatred and xenophobia for sure, but "beyond comparison"?  So it's worse than the Crusades, the Holocaust, and all the other religious and ethnic violence that has happened throughout history and unfortunately continues today?  I think not.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Don't forget Ireland protestants vs catholics. Of all the pointless religious wars, that has got to win the cake. Throwing molotoves at kids in kindergarden and placing bombs on the street because you disagree on the human embodying the authority of a faith of "Love thy neighboor"? I mean, wow...

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Why do all these asshats who want to limit people's religous freedoms and other freedoms call themselves things like the "Freedom Party"? Are they trying to be ironic?

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

They actually call themselves freiheitlich, which can mean freedom-loving, of a tolerant world-view/unprejudiced (ha!) or liberal. Not sure what any of those has to do with their policies, though.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

I believe the term is "Orwellian."  Using "doublespeak" to apply terms inconsistantly to the opposite effect.  Here, the "Freedom" Party actually wants to "opress."

A more local example would be Fox News' slogan of "Fair and Balanced," when they mean anything but.  I actually find that quite hilarious, as I doubt they ever think of themselves as using Orwellian tactics.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

The sad part is Orwellian tactics work incredibly well on uninformed people. Considering the level of culture and knowledge of the average individual and, well... Look out the window...

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Freedom party... named as such because of their great belief that they should have the freedom to suppress the freedom of others

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Show me a political party that has no plans to suppress someone's freedom, and I'll show you a political party that has no plans.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

So your saying the TEA PARTY has no plans? your nothing but a socialist progressive communist facist. Your are proof of the dying Conservative breed that were nothing more than closeted gays out to screw themselves over.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Living up to your name well, I see.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Ironic how the "freedom party" wants to destory the freedom of Muslims to worship.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

This gets to the core of the problem of freedom... freedom to, freedom from, freedom to stop things, freedom to no be stopped.  Just look how big of a meme 'freedom to discriminate' is in the US... one person's freedom is another's oppression, and often they are mutually exclusive.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Yeah, apparently Austrian politicians aren't as sensitive about the whole Hitler thing as German ones are.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Your party doesn't deserve to be call the freedom party of your gonna trample over the freedoms of a entire religion.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Ironic, since the muslim religion only offers freedoms to male members of it's religion.

You know in twenty years when we all look back it will be with shame at the bigoted behavior some of us are exhibiting during this time of international wars on terrorism. Future sociciologists will look at forum posts like yours, shake their heads and wonder how we could ever be so closed minded.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Just because you defend the rights of someone doesn't mean you agree with them.

Also, you should really know more about a subject before making claims like that.  That's like me saying that all christian show up to military funerals with signs that say "God hates f@gs!"

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Read the Koran.  If you aren't a Muslim male, you are either property - Muslim women - or you're destined to die as a result of holy jihad - everyone else.

This isn't a misinterpretation or any kind of exaggeration - it's fact.  Read it if you don't believe me.

Huh.

http://www.submission.org/women/

Guess you must have studied so well the Koran as to know more about it than plenty of philosophers and, you know, my muslim wife (hey, I'm christian, gotta love those civil [or protestant] weddings, heh? )

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

I love it.

"My muslim wife."

That is a nice touch.

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Yep, pregnant of our first kid, a boy, as well. In her last month. And you know what? Many of her friends, and by extension mine, are muslim, so's her family and her sisters' husbands. I have yet to find either her, her 2 sisters, mother or friend with a veil on the head or locked inside.

By the way, here's some stuff from the collection her sister designed:

So go troll elsewhere...

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

Given that the bible intimates similar ideas... why is one okay and not the other?

Re: Anti-Mosque Game Created by Austrian Political Party

And when did I say that?

Oh, wait, I didn't.

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm

Matthew Wilsonthe sad thing is there are trolls on both sides of this. people need to stop acting like their side is so pure.10/18/2014 - 12:19pm
MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
Matthew Wilsonwhile he focused on gg, he did call out both sides crap.10/17/2014 - 7:18pm
