DFC Intelligence: F2P market worth $2 billion by 2015

September 1, 2010

According to a new report from DFC Intelligence, the market for English based free-to-play games will grow from $250 million in 2009 to $2 billion by 2015. DFC Intelligence says that growth will be attributed to broadband adoption and consumer comfort with buy digital content. Further, DFC Intelligence says that, by the end of 2010, English free-to-play games will have 128 million registered users.

"For many Korean companies the market in North America has not taken off nearly as fast as they expected,” said DFC analyst Insun Yoon. “Much of this can be attributed to the immature infrastructure and a lack of established payment and service mechanisms. The good news is that this is starting to change and consumers are starting to realize that the game play of top high-end F2P games can be quite sophisticated."

Certainly the market for brand name free to play games is expanding: Sony Online Entertainment recently announced a free to play version of Ever Quest II and Free Realms continues to find success across a wide demographic. Key players like Turbine have fully embraced the model with free to play versions of Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online as well.

I hope that consoles will get some F2P games soon. That way the market can really start to boom.

1 vs 100 tried Free to Play, but then it got cancelled after two seasons.  Although, that might just because people weren't interested in that kind of F2P.

Re: DFC Intelligence: F2P market worth $2 billion by 2015

I didn't consider 1 vs. 100 to be that good of a game to be honest. It would have been better if they didn't do the game in a season style like the actual show was.

ZenI felt Brutal Legends was a funny & beautiful look at the world of rock from Double Fines point of view. The only parts I wasn't hot for were the RTS bits as it felt forced. Otherwise fantastic.02/12/2012 - 1:34pm
DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm
