TEN Releases First Exergame Ratings

Just a few weeks after a child psychiatrist called for games to feature exercise ratings, a non-profit health advocacy group affiliated with Games for Health has released its own exergame rating system.

The Exergame Network (TEN) came up with its Exergaming Experience Rating System (EERS), which scores games first on their game play, interface and energy expended, and then grades on an additional seven criteria, including customization, accessibility, biometric feedback, intervention capability, socialization, sustainability and safety.

For TEN’s first batch of reviews, it selected Wii Fit, EA Sports Active, Wii Sports, Rock Band, Dance Dance Revolution and the PlayStation 2 Eye Toy game Kinetic. Based on the first three criteria, DDR came out on top (scoring 17 out of a possible 21), a position it held onto when factoring in the other seven attributes (where it received a score of 27 out of a possible 49) as well. Overall DDR achieved a score of 63 percent (44 out of a possible 70 when merging the two sections).

Kinetic came in second with 60 percent, followed by Wii Fit with 57 percent, while Wii Sports brought up the rear with 47 percent.

TEN said it hopes to test and review 40 plus exergames over the next year.
