Montreal Police: Dawson College Massacre Developer Won't Be Charged

September 15, 2010 -

Montreal police will not charge the creator of a game that uses the September 2006 shooting at Dawson College that left one dead and 19 injured. Police said that they could not charge the 23-year-old Ontario man who goes by the name "Virtuaman" because no one could accuse him of an actual crime.

His crime, according to some who were deeply offended by the game, was recreating killer Anastasia DeSousa’s violent rampage. While the Montreal police department has asked for the game to be removed because it is not "socially sensitive or moral," the creator has no obligation to do so.

The game, a simple top-down action game called Dawson College Massacre, was released on September 8. It is available on Newgrounds.com now. Despite the complaints, Newgrounds has not taken the game down.

While the game remains online, "Virtuaman" posted a lengthy statement on the game's page to apologize and try to explain why he made the game in the first place. Below is an excerpt from the Newgrounds page where he tries to speak directly to citizens of Montreal, who have been subjected to a number of news stories on the game:

"In the end I can see that Montreal is most angry with this games existence and at me for creating it. For that I can only say, it is only a game, it was not created with the purpose of offending anyone specifically, it was not created to make money(I never received and never will receive money for this game.), it was created to bring attention to the reality of school shootings, it was created to explore an area that is unexplored, it was created to teach others that this is what happens in a school shooting. Why? Because damn near all of you are in a college or high school and you should be educated about such things."

Oh boy....thought police....

I have a dream, break the chains of copy right oppression! http://zippydsmlee.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/cigital-disobedience/

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Let's renegotiate them.

Didn't know about the Dawson incident now I do ... I would say the game was a success than on bringing light to something that occurred.

Re: Montreal Police: Dawson College Massacre Developer ...

Wait, wait, wait... "killer Anastasia DeSousa’s violent rampage"...?  I'm sorry, but it's doesn't reflect well on this site when a journalist confuses the name of the shooter (Kimveer Gill) with one of his victims.

That said, as a graduate of Dawson College, I haven't played Dawson College Massacre.  However, if I understand its creator's rationale, the point of making the game was similar to Danny Ledonne's for creating Super Columbine Massacre RPG.  Quite frankly, if video games allow people to explore topics in ways other media never could, I see reason enough to support it, however tasteless some might argue that subject matter to be.

As well they shouldn't. Newgrounds is a free area of expression, not your personal toy to use as a means for creating a nanny state. And if anyone is offended, then don't play their fucking games or watch their movies or even go to their website. And quit pushing your morality on us.

Yeesh, talk about pointing out the obvious. :p

Re: Montreal Police: Dawson College Massacre Developer ...

This game is hard. One shot kill deaths for the player.

Re: Montreal Police: Dawson College Massacre Developer ...

Just like in real life.

Re: Montreal Police: Dawson College Massacre Developer ...

I remember when the VA Tech incident occured and people were bugging about that as well.  Problem is, Newgrounds is meant to be a free site to express anything, and thats what Tom Fulp said when complaints came to remove the game.

Re: Montreal Police: Dawson College Massacre Developer ...

Didn't help when the kid who made it decided to be a complete douche and demand money in exchange for removal of the game.

Re: Montreal Police: Dawson College Massacre Developer ...

Well that's good news. Also taking a look at the game it does seem like the creator was trying to say something and it wasn't just some mindless shooter like some other games we've seen of this nature.

quiknkoldIt says in the article that being in florida, you can get fired regardless if its a fireable offence10/20/2014 - 7:19am
Michael ChandraIf your employee respectfully disagrees with your advice, that's not a fireable offense. If they ignore your order, THEN you have the right to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 6:49am
Michael ChandraI... Don't get one thing. If you do not want your employee to do X, why do you tell them it's advice or a wish? Give them a damn order.10/20/2014 - 6:48am
james_fudgeA leak that had me worried about being swatted by Lizard Squad.10/20/2014 - 6:03am
james_fudgeIt should be noted that the author leaked the GJP group names online10/20/2014 - 6:03am
MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
Andrew EisenInteresting read. Unfortunately, too vague to form an opinion on but at least now I know what faefrost was talking about in James' editorial.10/19/2014 - 10:39pm

Neo_DrKefkaOnly good thing I seen come out of the Biddle incident was the fact a professional fighter offered to give 10k to an anti bullying charity for a round in the ring with Biddle.10/19/2014 - 7:49pm
Neo_DrKefkaEven after all the interviews she is still on twitter making fun of people with disabilities (Autism) yet she is a part of the crowd that is on the so called right side of history...10/19/2014 - 7:48pm
Neo_DrKefkaWhich #GameGate supports are constantly being harassed and bullied. Brianna Wu who I told everyone she was trolling GamerGate weeks ago with her passive aggressive threats was looking for that crazy person in the crowd.10/19/2014 - 7:47pm
Neo_DrKefkaI believe the problem #GamerGate has with Sam Biddle is he is apart of this blogging group that in a way hates or detests its readers. Also being apart of the crowd that claims its on the right side of history isn't helping when he is advocating bullying10/19/2014 - 7:45pm
MechaTama31Of course, I'm looking at these tweets in isolation, I don't know a thing about the guy.10/19/2014 - 7:06pm
MechaTama31If anything, the sarcastic implication seems to be that the SJW crowd is bringing back the bullying of nerds. But it's the GGers who are out for his blood? I'm lost...10/19/2014 - 7:01pm
MechaTama31I don't really get this Sam Biddle thing. The reaction to his tweets seems to be taking them at face value, but... they're tongue in cheek. Right?10/19/2014 - 7:00pm
Andrew EisenI have it. The problem, so far as I can tell, is neither of them allow me to overlay my webcam feed or text links to my Extra-Life fundraising page.10/19/2014 - 4:08pm
