DOJ Gives $4M in Grants to Law Enforcement for Piracy Fight

October 1, 2010 -

The Justice Department announced this week that Law enforcement agencies throughout the United States would receive almost $4 million in grants to fight intellectual property infringement. Police departments and District Attorneys in California, North Carolina, Florida, New York, Mississippi, Virginia and Texas will get a chunk of the money, according to The Wrap.

The Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department, the National Crime Prevention Council, the National Association of Attorneys General, and the National White Collar Crime Center were also on the list to receive grant money.

The Motion Picture Association of America was supportive of the grant money, for obvious reasons:

"The motion picture industry, along with all U.S. creative industries, leads the U.S. economy in contributing to job growth, and protecting the economic engine these industries represent from theft is critical," MPAA president and interim CEO Bob Pisano said.

Well this is utter crap. Not only are they using taxpayer money to enforce the outdated business models of private corporations, but they're effectively bribing the police to do it. Police agencies have consistently said that they have better things to do than chase after copyright infringers, like you know, catch murders and rapists.

Not to mention copyright holders treat their infringement as worse than those afformentioned crimes.

Moreover, copyright enforcement is supposed to be the domain of the FBI, not local PD's.
