WarCraft III Smack Talk Culminates IRL Beating

October 22, 2010 -

A Vancouver high school student was assaulted by a group of people on Monday, all because the victim and his friends reportedly trash talked opponents after a victorious WarCraft III skirmish.

The student in question was roughed up at Eric Hamber secondary school during lunch hour. The Vancouver Sun reported that the beating came following a WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos online battle in a Defense of the Ancients custom scenario, after which the winning team mocked the losers.

“Four or five assailants,” described as in their late teens, tracked the boy to Eric Hamber, and “made him kiss their feet before hitting him with batons, breaking his fingers.” No arrests have been made yet, though Vancouver’s police youth squad continues to investigate the assault.

Vancouver Police Constable Lindsey Houghton added, “I guess some people take these things exceptionally seriously.”

...people still play Warcraft III?

Re: WarCraft III Smack Talk Culminates IRL Beating

And people still play Classic Doom. And then there are those who continuously play games that have no multiplayer feature such as Pacman, Wolfenstein 3D and Terminator 2: Arcarde. Just to name a few...

There are people who prefer Starcraft to Starcraft 2. Just saying.

Re: WarCraft III Smack Talk Culminates IRL Beating

Yes.  Blizzard makes games that stand the test of time.  Use Warcraft III to log into Battle.net and you'll see plenty of people still play it everyday.

Pah, real WC3 fans spit on DoTA player anyway, whether they taunt us or not.

On topic; kind of agree with Dorkmaster somewhat.  While violence over computer games is not something to be condoned, it's true that people hiding behind the annonymity of the internet should be... "discougraged" somehow.

Yes, Big Brother needs to watch us so that no one is ever mean to anyone ever.  Because gloating is bad.  Everyone played therefore everyone won after all!

Quite ironic that you took the time to put "sarcasm tags" on your comment while clearly missing the humour in mine.

Re: WarCraft III Smack Talk Culminates IRL Beating

I can't tell how severe the "mocking" was after the match, but this is partly why I miss arcades.  If you taunted your opponent when you beat them the way a lot of people do online, you'd get your teeth kicked in.  Mind you, this sounds more like a violent group taking things way too far, but the fact remains.  Online multiplayer makes people dicks.  :P

Re: WarCraft III Smack Talk Culminates IRL Beating

True. Mocking in public will get you nuked. Plus, Arcardes are fucking awesome.

I guess no one knows who these gang bangers were but it's probably best to say they knew this kid. A gang of hackers who tracked the boy would seem unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.

And, if you're gonna devote that much energy into finding someone and beating them up, you might as well use it for getting better in the game instead!

noobs.

Online multiplayer makes people dicks

Don´t say that, because there is plenty people who will love to use this incident as "evidence" of why videogames should be banned.

Just had a particularly morbid thought: given that there have now been multiple cases where victims of cyber-bullying have committed either suicide or assault, how much longer until we get someone unhinged enough to do both over the same incident?

Also, I found the better quote from the constable was, "Most people can separate reality from online fiction." Kudos to that cop for having an actual brain in her head.

Matthew Wilsonits the twiter exchange I linked too a few days ago.10/19/2014 - 1:29pm
Andrew EisenThat link doesn't work. Browsed the Twitter feed but couldn't find anything. Did find someone claiming a Gawker writer advocated bullying but didn't say who or where.10/19/2014 - 1:05pm

prh99Also there is no story in rational and respectful discussion (where you can find it).10/19/2014 - 10:44am
prh99Well they are probably doing it on Twitter and probably the GG hashtag so any voice reason gets drowned out by idiocy. Also it's far easier to broad brush a group.10/19/2014 - 10:41am
Wonderkarpdont fool yourself, Technogeek. Remember Mass Effect 3? How about the ferver against Phil Fish?10/19/2014 - 10:18am
MechaTama31None of which is the fault or responsibility of the people who are not trolling, harassing, threatening, doxxing, etc. So why is their opinion hostage to the people who are?10/19/2014 - 10:06am
TechnogeekIf the developer were male there wouldn't have been a "conversation" in the first place.10/19/2014 - 2:27am
Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm
