As the case surrounding a law he originally authored makes its way to the Supreme Court next week, California State Senator Leland Yee issued a handful of comments related to what will eventually be a landmark decision for gamers.
The Court will, of course, hear oral arguments for Schwarzenegger v EMA on Tuesday, November 2 at 10:00 AM.
Yee said he was “hopeful” that the Court would give “parents a valuable tool to protect children from the harmful effects of excessively violent, interactive video games.”
Yee additionally claimed that SCOTUS has "often ruled" in favor of protecting kids and limiting their access, citing topics such as "pornography, gambling, marriage, firearms, jury duty, tobacco, alcohol, voting, abortion, licenses, and the death penalty" as examples.
Yee continued:
Parents – not retailers or game makers – should be able to decide whether or not their children can play in a world of murder and violence that often degrades women and racial minorities. The video game industry should not be allowed to put their profit margins over the rights of parents and the well-being of children.
The state senator continued to claim that the interactive nature of games makes them “vastly different” than other forms of media, saying that their immersion “results in a more powerful experience and potentially dangerous learned behavior in children and youth.”
Yee added:
… parents can easily discern if other forms of media are appropriate for their children, whereas violent video games can contain hundreds of hours of footage with the most atrocious, racist, and sexist content often reserved for the highest levels.”

This is perhaps one of the most insane things I have ever heard somebody say about videogames apart from Jack Thompson. What in the fuck is wrong with this guy? Seriously, the leap in logic needed to make such a statement is huge.
I sure hope that Mr. Yee is just making such an outrageous statement only for news bites and doesn't actually believe this. If he does, then he is not mentally fit to be in charge of anything.

1. Parents already have a plethora of tools to help them decide what they want their children to play and not play. Those tools are effective and don't infringe on anyone's rights.
2. There is no evidence that "excessively violent, interactive video games" are harmful to children or anyone else.
3. Are there any video games out there that aren't interactive?

Gee, if only there was a way for parents to educate themselves on the matter. Maybe if the game had ratings of some kind. Some sort of an entertainment software ratings board. Oh wait, there is. It is the organization whom, against their will, you are trying deputise into a government entity by giving their ratings force of law.

Actually, he isn't trying to deputise the ESRB or use their ratings system. The Bill objects to game with "intense violence" against "sufficiently human-like characters," as well as other vague descriptions that could be used by prosecutors to persecute the gaming industry almost at random. How could salesclerks possibly know beforehand which games will get them in trouble, until law enforcement busts them? They could sell a T rated game, and police might be forced to fine them for breaking this law just because someone in the State gov't objects to that particular game.
