DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

November 1, 2010 -

DirectTV dumps game-centric network G4TV from its line-up of programming November 1. DirecTV tells Entertainment Weekly that rising costs are the main reason for dumping the network, while G4TV says that DirectTV rejected its offer to continue carrying its programming. DirectTV has an estimated 18 million subscriber in the U.S.

So what should DirectTV subscribers do? Well, you could switch to Dish Network, or cable. Cable and satellite TV subscribers always seem to get caught in the middle of negotiations over what providers should pay networks to carry programs. Why can't Home Shopping Network have a feud with DishNetwork, DirectTV and cable operators?

G4TV's statement can be found here, while DirectTV's statement to EW can be found here. You can always catch X-Play on the web. Thanks to Kotaku.

The more they tried to be spike TV the more they lost ratings..... strange that....

I have a dream, break the chains of copy right oppression! http://zippydsmlee.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/cigital-disobedience/

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Let's renegotiate them.

I miss TechTV. I wish they would at least bring it back on the web.

PS: TechTV was bought by G4 and became G4TechTV, Then they dropped TechTV from the title.

TechTV is where Xplay started as Extened Play (Adam was still the host) and AOTS started as the Screen Savers (with Patric Norton and Leo LePort). I do miss actual learning. Leo taught me how to build my first computer, sigh, memories.

I may be crazy, but I am not insane.

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

G4TV... there's nothing about that network i like.  Even Extended Play went downhill, imo.  as for direct tv, good for them!

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

G4 is "gaming centric" the same way that MTV is "music centric."

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

I always do call G4 the "Gamer's MTV"

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

The only shows they have devoted to gaming is X-Play, hardly gaming centric. Most of their air time is taken up by COPS and Cheaters re-runs along with some cheesy Tekeshi's Castle knock offs.

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

No more Unbeatable Banzuke?

No more Ninja Warrior?

No more International Sexy Ladies Show?

No more That's Tough?

How will I go on?

I'm Charlie Owens, good night, and good luck.

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

I actually like Attack of the Show.  Plus reheated COPS is always great to watch too.

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

Good for DirectTv. I wish more TV providers could drop the horrible excuse of a "Gamer's Channel"  that is G4TV. Nothing good came from them since the failed merger with TechTV.

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

Merger? That was an effing takeover. Only one show is left over from TechtV and that's it. If they had at least kept Icons then I MIGHt still watch it, but, no, they're tryign ot be Spike.

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

I think G4 is a classic example of why taking a strong niche product and broadening the appeal to get move viewers is not always a good idea.... sometimes it looses you the niche and puts you in competition with better established brands that do the 'general' thing better.. leaving you with neither.

Re: DirectTV Dumps G4TV From Line-Up

 ^this.

I can't help but think that while ditching games has clearly helped them ratingswise, they've lost their biggest bargaining chip with the providers. Previously, DirecTV had a games channel, which improved their channel lineup.

Now, DirectTV has two Spike TVs, one not as good as the other. It's hardly surprising that they dropped the crap one.

Andrew EisenNeo_DrKefka - "Attacking"? Interesting choice of words. Also interesting that you quoted something that wasn't actually said. Leaving out a relevant link, are you?10/20/2014 - 11:04am

Neo_DrKefkaThat is correct in an At-Will state you or the employer can part ways at any time. However Florida also has laws on the books about "Wrongful combinations against workers" http://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2012/448.04510/20/2014 - 10:07am

Michael ChandraBy the way, I am not saying Andrew should stop talking about Wii-U. I find it quite nice. :)10/20/2014 - 8:53am
Michael Chandra'How dare he ignore my wishes and my advice! I am his boss! I could have ordered him but I should be able to say it's advice rather than ordering him directly!'10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP goes "EZK, do not talk about X publicly for a week, we're preparing a big article on it" and he still tweets about X, they'd have a legitimate reason to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP tells Andrew "we'd kinda prefer it if you stopped talking about Wii-U for 1 week" and he'd tweet about it anyway, firing him for it would be idiotic.10/20/2014 - 8:51am
Michael ChandraLegal right, sure. But that doesn't make it any less pathetic of an excuse.10/20/2014 - 8:50am
ZippyDSMleeYou mean right to fire states.10/20/2014 - 8:50am
james_fudgesome states have "at will" employee laws10/20/2014 - 7:50am
quiknkoldIt says in the article that being in florida, you can get fired regardless if its a fireable offence10/20/2014 - 7:19am
Michael ChandraIf your employee respectfully disagrees with your advice, that's not a fireable offense. If they ignore your order, THEN you have the right to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 6:49am
Michael ChandraI... Don't get one thing. If you do not want your employee to do X, why do you tell them it's advice or a wish? Give them a damn order.10/20/2014 - 6:48am
james_fudgeA leak that had me worried about being swatted by Lizard Squad.10/20/2014 - 6:03am
james_fudgeIt should be noted that the author leaked the GJP group names online10/20/2014 - 6:03am
MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
Andrew EisenInteresting read. Unfortunately, too vague to form an opinion on but at least now I know what faefrost was talking about in James' editorial.10/19/2014 - 10:39pm
