California State Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo), the chief architect behind the California game law now starring in the Supreme Court production of Schwarzenegger vs. EMA, is considering a run for Mayor of San Francisco.
In an email to supporters, Yee stated that he walked into city hall today and opened an exploratory committee for Mayor. Yee added, “As someone who grew up in San Francisco, attended public schools, raised a family, and has been serving this city for over 20 years, I am excited about starting this new discussion.”
Yee’s website is already adorned with “For Mayor” descriptors.
After saying that everything he is today, he owes to San Francisco, Yee offered an overview of his life so far:
I came here as an immigrant at the age of 3. I grew up in the City. I went to local public schools and was fortunate enough to get a chance to go to college. I raised my family here – sending my four children to public schools – and served the people of San Francisco as a School Board member, a Supervisor, a State Assemblyman and now as State Senator.
Current San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom (D), in his second term, has his current stint expire on January 8, 2012. Newsom, however, was elected Lieutenant Governor of California in this year’s elections. It’s expected that because of Newsom’s win, the city’s Board of Supervisor’s will name an interim successor to fill the remaining year of his term as Mayor.
Yee was just reelected to the State Senate, receiving almost 80 percent of the vote.

When Newsom won, his only opponent was Camejo, the Green candidate. San Francisco is so liberal, the Republicans did not even bother to put up a candidate. So unless another Democrat steps in and takes the nomination in the primary, we will be stuck with Yee as Mayor.

I don't think he will win the Mayorship of San Francisco. SF is a fairly liberal city and while they push the envelope in thinks like health, anyone restricting free speech is in for a fight.

No, he'd fit right in! They banned happy meal toys because parents can't possibly decide for themselves if they want to feed kids a happy meal, and he authored a bill that'll ban adult games since parents can't possibly decide for themselves what content is appropriate for their child.
Besides, there are enough gay people in San Fran that just vote Democrat regardless of who it is or what they've done, and he's a hero for Dems in Cali because of this bill.

There are plenty of 'Army of Two' and 'Gears of War' players who would never vote for Yee. Okay, I'm sure there are some gays who don't play either of those games, but not many.

No one who gets to an office that high is stupid or uninformed.... he knows full well that the law would do little to actually protect children, but the political gains are significant. This whole bill was little more then a tax payer funded political campaign.

True, but I'm wondering if this run for San Francisco mayor is dependent on the SCOTUS decision(that is, how narrow the decision is, because if the majority opinion for EMA/ESA shuts the door completely on a narrower law passing Constitutional muster, then I think he'll be more likely to run for Mayor than stay in the State Senate).
