Some Shopping Tips for Parents.. from Fox News

November 17, 2010 -

Fox News, of all places, offers some sound advice on buying games for young children this holiday shopping season. This is probably due to the fact that familiar game journalist Blake Snow wrote the article.. In his article he talks about why parents probably shouldn't buy Call of Duty: Black Ops for their under-17 youngster, the iPhone app from the ESRB that can aid in buying age appropriate games, and even some sage advice from the ESRB's Patricia Vance. Here's some of that advice:

"The fact is that even the coolest mom or dad can't keep up with all of the new games," Patricia Vance, president of the ESRB, told FoxNews.com. "With the holidays fast approaching, parents and other gift-givers will flock to stores to find that perfect game for a well-deserving child. But, just like movies, not all games are right for every child."

"By using the ESRB mobile app, parents can access rating summaries right in the store, often when they need it most," Vance explained. "These summaries go well beyond the rating category and content descriptors which can be found on the game box, and provide specific examples of the content that earned a game the rating it was assigned." It's similar to Kids in Mind, a site that provides information about why a movie received the rating it did.

It's good to see parents getting some real advice without all the bullshit. Read the rest here.

Yes, Black Ops is "terribly inappropriate" for 16 year olds but the very second they become 17 they are totally ready for it. When will people learn each kid is different and that many kids under 17 play M games and are fine?

Re: Some Shopping Tips for Parents.. from Fox News

"Call of Duty: Black Ops is one of the biggest video games of the year, but with enough graphic language and violence to make Scarface blush, it's also terribly inappropriate for anyone under 17"

Neither graphic language nor violence have ever been shown to be harmful to kids.

Once again, a writer makes money by catering to groundless fears about video games. The witch hunt continues.

Re: Some Shopping Tips for Parents.. from Fox News

Head spinning.

But they pushed ESRB's mobile app.  Whatever happened to kids writing down Christmas lists, sending them "To Santa", the parents (aka "Santa") open the letter, do research, and then buy the gifts?  Ample opportunity to locate gameplay videos online, reviews, ESRB info, Metacritic ratings, and the cheapest price.  Plus if the kid tend to put the things they want most that don't cost a fortune starting around position 3 or 4 on their list.  So parents only have to research on the first few games that their kids want.

Sign of the times.  I'm sure we haven't heard the last breathless, wildly inaccurate decrial of murder simulators from Fox (do they still bring ol' Jackie Boy on?), but I think this says a lot about growing mainstream acceptance and understanding of games.

Fox News reporting on news and advice without the classic Fox News BS. Now I know hell is freezing over.

Re: Some Shopping Tips for Parents.. from Fox News

Kinda of suprising seeing Fox right. Even more so that the normal Fox tint is nowhere to be found.

Re: Some Shopping Tips for Parents.. from Fox News

I guess even Fox can be right sometimes

Re: Some Shopping Tips for Parents.. from Fox News

I have to admit, that is sound advice.
