Poll: Americans Can't Live Without Broadband

What is the most impactful technological advance in the last ten years according to the American public? According to a new Zogby poll, broadband internet access.

The Zogby International interactive survey found that adults think the expansion of high-speed internet has had the greatest technological impact on society over the past decade. The survey also revealed that broadband is a technology that most believe they cannot live without. The poll of 1,950 adults was conducted from Dec. 8 - Dec. 10, 2010.

Facebook came in a close second (22 percent) to high speed internet (24 percent) as the technology having the most impact on society on their lives over the past decade. Google was third on that list with 10 percent. Women (27 percent) and adults under the age of 55 said Facebook was the most impactful while men (27 percent) and those over 55 said high-speed internet had had the greatest impact on society. Adults aged 35-54 were split between Facebook (25 percent) and high-speed internet (24 percent). Young adults, aged 18-24, said Google (25 percent) was the second most impactful invention of the past decade, with Facebook (28 percent) being first.

High-speed internet came in first as the technology most said they could not live without (28 percent), with email the second on the list (18 percent). Facebook only had 3 percent support among all adults. However, 15 percent of young adults (aged 18-24) said they could not live without Facebook.
