Judge to Hacker: Put Your Skills to Better Use

January 13, 2011 -

A South Australian judge has given a 21-year-old hacker a break, sentencing him to a three-year suspended sentence. Anthony Scott Harrison was accused of hacking into thousands of computers in Australia and abroad, and infecting them with a virus he developed that stole credit card numbers.

Judge Paul Rice said Harrison told the defendant that he should put his skills to better use, and that his offense was the result of an obsession with computers and learning how to hack.

"You are a person not without a lot of ability but you just used it in the wrong way," the judge said. "I accept this offending was born out of your passion for computers, your naivety and youthful curiosity."

"Whether you can now gain employment in the security IT industry is problematic," he added.

Harrison was given a suspended sentence, which should keep him out of jail if he stays out of trouble.

Nah the private and government sector of anti-cyber terrorism need people like this.  I actually hope some agancy picks up this guy and uses him as a consultant.

The simple truth is, the majority of the IT world is inept, stupid, and don't know better, we need bad guys on our side to make sure we can stop the other bad guys.  As to the real extent of this guy skills, who knows, but you better believe lots of former hackers who are now working for uncle sam.

Er emails are one thing but Ccards and such... um no... toss his ass in jail..

I have a dream, break the chains of copy right oppression! http://zippydsmlee.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/cigital-disobedience/

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Let's renegotiate them.

Re: Judge to Hacker: Put Your Skills to Better Use

It's nice that there are Judges who recognise the Hacker's Ethos. Even though this isn't the best case to acknowledge it.

Kids who snoop on their neighbours' wifi or jailbreak phones and consoles for the sake of learning or bypassing abusive terms of service shouldn't be restrained. Actual theft is not hacking. It's "Cracking" and no real hackers defend it.

Re: Judge to Hacker: Put Your Skills to Better Use

Extremely lenient and naive on the judge's part. Thousands of computers? Credit card number theft? Youthful curiosity my ass, this punk was going to fill his house with expensive shit at others' expense. Lock his ass up.

Re: Judge to Hacker: Put Your Skills to Better Use

Jail and the threat of jail will serve the same purpose in this case. Added vengeance isn't necessary.

Re: Judge to Hacker: Put Your Skills to Better Use

Agreed... i mean if the results of his hacks were just stupid pranks or some such i can see the judge going easy on him, but this sounds like a honest to god attempt at actual theft! Granted to give the judge the benefit of the doubt, we don't know the details of the case and there could have been some circumstantial evidence that shows that the guy had no intention of actually using the credit card numbers and thus leant to the idea that he only did it to prove he could (hence the youthful curiosity)... but this is still sounds really lenient and naive.

Michael ChandraBy the way, I am not saying Andrew should stop talking about Wii-U. I find it quite nice. :)10/20/2014 - 8:53am
Michael Chandra'How dare he ignore my wishes and my advice! I am his boss! I could have ordered him but I should be able to say it's advice rather than ordering him directly!'10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP goes "EZK, do not talk about X publicly for a week, we're preparing a big article on it" and he still tweets about X, they'd have a legitimate reason to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP tells Andrew "we'd kinda prefer it if you stopped talking about Wii-U for 1 week" and he'd tweet about it anyway, firing him for it would be idiotic.10/20/2014 - 8:51am
Michael ChandraLegal right, sure. But that doesn't make it any less pathetic of an excuse.10/20/2014 - 8:50am

quiknkoldIt says in the article that being in florida, you can get fired regardless if its a fireable offence10/20/2014 - 7:19am
Michael ChandraIf your employee respectfully disagrees with your advice, that's not a fireable offense. If they ignore your order, THEN you have the right to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 6:49am
Michael ChandraI... Don't get one thing. If you do not want your employee to do X, why do you tell them it's advice or a wish? Give them a damn order.10/20/2014 - 6:48am

MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
Andrew EisenInteresting read. Unfortunately, too vague to form an opinion on but at least now I know what faefrost was talking about in James' editorial.10/19/2014 - 10:39pm
