Sarien.net, a web site that used to serve up classic Sierra On-Line adventure games to the masses, recently found itself on the receiving end of a cease and desist letter from Activision. The web site's creator recently shared the bad news with visitors, posting the letter from Activision on its front page. Activision holds the rights to Sierra's classic games and apparently doesn't appreciate what the web site is doing. Sarien.net has been up and running since April of last year, but Activision didn't really take notice until the site decided to add iPhone and iPad browser support.
Here is what Activision said:
"While we appreciate your dedication to the Sierra classic library and understand that you are a fan of these games, Activision has not authorized the development or distribution of these games via your Website," the order reads. "Accordingly, we must demand that you immediately cease any further distribution or exploitation of the Sierra Games on your Website."
To quote Dean Martin, "ain't love a kick in the head?"

Activision wants to use them as a portal for free bits of the games.

"While we appreciate your dedication to the Sierra classic library"...
They omitted the REST of that, unfortunately, which was almost certainly "and are honestly baffled by it, as you can see by how we treat said library."
I'm a wee bit shocked that Activision remembered that the Sierra library existed. Certainly their treatment of it to date suggested otherwise.
Re: Activision Sends Sarien.net a Cease and Desist Love ...
Well, Activision usually just pretends that the Sierra Legacy titles don't exist, until someone starts on non-profit, fan created projects, and they have to release the hounds to protect their IP.

Re: Activision Sends Sarien.net Adventure Game Hub With ...
Hopefully this will send a message that there is a market demand for legit releases of these old games.
Re: Activision Sends Sarien.net Adventure Game Hub With ...
*nods* if I were Sarien, this is exactly the type of response I would put together. "Hey, sorry you feel that way about your IP. However, it looks like there is a market, could we work something out?"
Re: Activision Sends Sarien.net Adventure Game Hub With ...
And, at least possibly, Activision would consider working out a deal.
Good old Games does prove that a market for these classics exists.
Re: Activision Sends Sarien.net Adventure Game Hub With ...
Sounds like a rather reasonably worded letter.
They could have been very unpleasent about this, but they were classy and polite, and it is their IP.
