Mortal Kombat Classification Appeal Rejected in Australia

No Mortal Kombat for you, Australia. An appeal by publisher Warner Bros. Interactive to overturn an earlier decision by Australia's Classification Review Board to deny classification has also been denied. That means that the forthcoming Mortal Kombat reboot has been permanently refused classification in Australia, banning the title from official retail release. In an official statement, Warner Bros. Interactive praised fans in Australia and expressed disappointment in the classification board's decision:

"We're obviously extremely disappointed that the refused classification decision has been upheld by the Classification Review Board. We want to thank the thousands of Mortal Kombat fans in Australia and around the world who have voiced their support during the appeal process."

Mortal Kombat's reboot will still arrive next month in other territories so you can expect fans that want the game bad enough will simply import it from those regions.

Thanks to everyone in the shoutbox who mentioned this. The results are not shocking given that this is Australia we're talking about here.

I still find it disgusting that the majority of the Australian populace want an R18 rating, but it's all in the hands of the Attourney-Generals. The fact that can overturn the entire thing with just one vote of disapproval is absolutely pathetic.

Because this is totally democratic in the least, is it? Hah.

It doesn't stop people from simply importing it, which is probably cheaper anyway with the way most retailers like to upmarket the items, anyway. So why bother not having an R18 rating? People just get the damn thing another way, since it's not in any way illegal for somebody to import the game, only to sell it locally.

Supposedly, they're actually seizing import copies too. So basically Australians will be forced to pirate the game if they want it.

More likely they will download it from the internet becuase the $10,000 (USD?) fines. Can´t believe they get to those extremes with a game, like if it were cocaine. How delusional can they be?

Is it true that people who import games "banned" in Austrailia are subject to a fine and legal action? I heard that, but did not take the time to confirm this.
