Pachter: Sony-Geohotz Deal A Win for Sony

April 12, 2011

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says that the agreement between George Hotz and Sony may have a profound effect on future hacking on the PlayStation 3. The agreement, which we do not know the details of, serves as a permanent injunction of sorts against Hotz because he will no doubt avoid hacking the PS3 in the future. It may also serve as a deterrent to other PS3 hackers who want to tinker with the system.

"Yes, it's a win for Sony," Pachter said when asked by Eurogamer. "'Permanent injunction' means that Geohotz won't do it anymore. That's all Sony really wanted, and they want to show other hackers that they will prosecute them as well."

"I'm confident that most hackers will see the potential for litigation - and the costs involved - as a deterrent, at least in those countries that have laws respecting intellectual property rights."

Sony has not said what it plans to do with its litigation against member of the hacking group Fail0verFlow, but chances are it will push forward until it sends some sort of message to the hacking community.

"The agreement, which we do not know the details of...."

Then get a better source. I read the legal agreement last night already. If you havn't, it's because you have your eyes closed. Every PS3 hacking site has a copy of it already.

No need to be snotty.  At the time this article was written, that info was not widely available.  Now that it is, and from sources other than hacking sites, we'll write about it later today.

How does one become involved with the site creatively, Andrew? After having my review blog up for several months, I want to do more with journalism.

It won't. As long as there's curiosity, there will be hackers.

Game Politics, it's time for a mobile version of the site, don't you think?

Also, pissing a community of people off is the best way to get them to do what you want... I can't think of any examples where that has failed before
