Report: FBI, FTC, 22 AG's Looking into PSN Security Breach

Kotaku has confirmed that the FBI's cybercrimes unit in San Diego has joined two dozen state attorneys general and possibly the Federal Trade Commission in an investigation of Sony's security breach that exposed millions of users' data to hackers.

"The FBI is aware of the reports concerning the alleged intrusion into the Sony on line game server and we have been in contact with Sony concerning this matter," FBI special agent Darrell Foxworth told Kotaku. "We are presently reviewing the available information in an effort to determine the facts and circumstances concerning this alleged criminal activity."

Attorneys general in 22 states are also looking into the PSN fiasco, demanding answers from Sony and asking the company why it took them o long to warn customers of the potential danger. Kotaku says that the 22 states are sharing information with each other.

The attorneys general have also reportedly contacted the Federal Trade Commission to find out if the agency has launched a federal investigation.

The FTC may have jurisdiction in this particular case because it involves the loss of customer data through a security breach, according to what FTC spokeswoman Claudia Bourne Farrell told Kotaku.

Didn't Sony already announce why it took so long to warn customers, that they just found out the night before they warned them? If so, what's the point of the 22 AG's "demanding" to know why? It's already announced.

People seem to have this magical opinion that Sony knew the full extent of the attack .000000123 milliseconds after the attack actually happened.

Now that's not to say they didn't know sooner then they reported, but as with every thing everyone's bashing sony with, I'm waiting for something a bit more credible before i start grabbing the pitchfork and torch and going all angry mob on their ass.

most things that have been "confirmed" come from the hacking community and confidential sources or other rumors.

Sony didn't NEED to know the full extent of the breach. They knew there was a breach and they waited nine days to inform their customers.

I think in general companies are required to inform costumers early in the process.

Over the years I have gotten physical mailings from banks and such saying a potential compromises of databases occurred and that they would be offering credit monitoring.

So the laws generally require a proactive stance when an intrusion happens on a system that contains certain types of personal data.

I agree. I'd rather have to wait a couple days for full details than hear "this might happen" or "that possibly happened" and freak out for the next nine days.

Agreed. The system went down for far longer than before so we already knew something was wrong, and a ton of conspiracy theories are already flying about.

Hell, just yersterday I saw one person insistign that thsi is all a plot to get us to swtich to the Playstation 4 when it comes out.

Mmkay, so shutting down the network to force us onto a console that we haven't even seen the prototypes for yet and forcing us all to start fro mscratch on every game we own, losing all friend lists, and startign for mscratch on Playstation Home is somehow going to force people onto the Playstation 4?

Because when possible laws were breached a blog post by the company is not sufficient?

This is part of the job of AG's... to find out if a law was broken or not and respond to citizen's concerns.
