South Australia Getting R18+, Losing MA15+

April 28, 2011

South Australian Attorney-General John Rau says that he will support a measure that introduces the R18+ classification for games in the region, and replaces the MA15+ rating. Under Rau's new version of video games classification system, the ratings would be "G," "PG," "M" and "R18+." M15+ would be completely eliminated. Rau hopes that his new system will be adopted by all of Australia, but he's certainly willing for his region to "go it alone."

"At the moment, the MA15+ classification is like a crossover point between what is acceptable and what is unacceptable," Rau said to ABC News. "We want that to be a very clear gap. We will have a new classification R18+ and the MA15+ will disappear."

The one problem with changing MA15+ to R18+ is that it does not allow for game currently denied classification a chance to be reviewed again. Nevertheless, it is a step in the right direction - at least for part of the country.

Re: South Australia Getting R18+, Losing MA15+

This is my second attempt at this, I hope it comes out alright.

SA Attorney-General John Rau says he will push to abolish the MA15+ rating in South Australia to more clearly define what is suitable for children.

Yep, here we go again...

He says he hopes the states and territories will also adopt the position when they discuss classifications in July.

"I will push for the South Australian position on MA15+ games to be adopted nationally, but if it isn't, I'm prepared to go it alone," he said.

Like another certain Australian politician dictator, you decide to push YOUR beliefs on the people. Or as we commoners call it, kicking and screaming until you get your draconian laws passed. Sigh..., you people will never learn, will you?

Mr Rau says his move would change the system to provide G, PG, M and R18+ classifications.

So G, PG (helloooo lawsuit from the MPAA) Mature and 18 are okay, but what is the equivalent to a Teen rating equals RATING BAD? This doesn't make ANY sense. So you finally include an adult rating, but not you are excluding an important part of the gaming groups, teenagers. Worse you are incuding younger groups and NOT them? That's a terrible decision! There SHOULDN'T be a compromise on rights! Especially those who go out and actually go out and SUPPORT. YOUR. ECONOMY. This is clear and dangerous discrimination and disrespect to those who are growing up an could lead your country someday and YOU are isolating them! Why?

"There has to be a clear difference between what adults can get and what children can get," he said.

So you think it's okay to treat teenagers like children until they are 18. Doesn't anyone know what a BAD idea this is? This screws them up and either turn them into people who mindlessly obey a controlling government and religions (sheeple) or are just messed up period.

"At the moment, the MA15+ classification is like a crossover point between what is acceptable and what is unacceptable.

Quit trying to push your security theater nanny state logic on people! It should be up to the PARENTS, and you have NO right to say this is right, but this isn't! The Australian is sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong, AGAIN! Common sense starting to sound like a parrot that speaks the obvious, but YOU people are to stupid to listen!

"We want that to be a very clear gap. We will have a new classification R18+ and the MA15+ will disappear," he said.

Anyone find this strange? WHY is there a compromise in getting an R18 rating? Just ADD the rating and don't eliminate another one. This is suspiciously sounding like Bush and Obama all over again...

The Federal Government says Australia is the only country that does not have an R18+ classification for video games and has given the states and territories until July to agree to it.

And that's good, but once again, why is the equivalent of a T rating disappearing?

But opponents say the new classification would open the floodgates to more violent games.

And it should, because there are ADULTS who want to play adult games. But hey, they can now wave the box in the opponent's faces and say "remember that game you tried having banned, because you didn't think Australians should be treated like adults? Well I get to play it now and there's nothing you and your morality police can do about it." Oh, and also spit on them, twice

>PG (helloooo lawsuit from the MPAA)

Why would the MPAA get upset about the existance of a PG rating in Australia?

That's probably what he's counting on.

This hits on everything I've been saying about what needs to go down down under.  My friend from Brisbane is gonna roll his eyes when he hears this...

Well said sir.  Well said.

edit:  What the... why is this comment all in bold?

Re: South Australia Getting R18+, Losing MA15+

*facepalm*

Ugh, that tears it.  I've now completely lost faith in Australia's politicians ever getting the point of the R18+ rating during this generation.

As I said in the shoutbox:

What he proposes is complete idiocy. All he proposes is relabeling all MA15 games as R18. It solves nothing.

Re: South Australia Getting R18+, Losing MA15+

Sounds like a trap to me.

Re: South Australia Getting R18+, Losing MA15+

I was thinking the same. Ratings systems has to be a little more specific. I think they are doing it to slap the label on any game they don´t like, even if the game was developed for a younger audience.

I just don´t understand it.

Re: South Australia Getting R18+, Losing MA15+

This has to be some sort of intentional joke on Rau's part, I can't imagine that any reasoned train of thought on the matter of Australia's ratings would naturally lead to this conclusion- this is at best, not a change in the status quo, and at worst, exacerbates the problem by meaning 15+ games will just get the edge taken off them to fit into M, much the same way that 18+ games are filed down to fit into 15+.

Like hellfire said above, this seems to be more an attempt to get gamers to shut up by giving them the false choice of either not having what they want and saying where they are, but getting it and actually being worse off, forgetting that there is a third, far more sensible choice.

Meh, makes me think of those fathers that throws out your toys because you want a newer one.

"Oh, you want to be grown up? Ok, we'll take away it for younger people."
