Rumor: Sony Considering Reward for Information on PSN Hackers

C|Net is reporting that Sony is considering offering a reward for information leading to those hackers responsible for breaking into its PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment networks that lead to both services being taken down nearly two weeks ago. According to the report, the company has been kicking around the idea of a reward for a while, but has not yet come to a final decision on the matter. Apparently, they are still weighing the pros and cons of offering such reward. If they do agree on it, the report claims, it will be brought before the company's top executives for approval.

CNET's report adds that any reward would have to be offered in cooperation with various law enforcement agencies around the world investigating the security breach including the FBI.

Sony has not publicly commented on this story.

It could work, but law enforcement might want them to hold off until they start running low on leads. Offering a reward means they'll get flooded with tips which can become nearly impossible to sift through. Everyone who knows someone with any significant degree of computer skill that they don't like would start reporting them.

Furthermore, considering how much consumers have been hurt by these attacks, I think we would have gotten at least a few leads by now, reward or no reward.

On the other hand, there's plenty of hackers who would try to feed the authorities false information to try to throw them off the trail, so a reward might help push those legitimate leads to the front.

I agree, besides, the longer you hold off on the reward, the more likely the persons responsible are to brag about it to somebody.
