NCsoft announced this week that it plans to relaunch its popular super hero-themed MMORPG, City of Heroes, as a free-to-play game later this year. NCsoft launched the game over seven years ago. The game joins other high profile titles that charge no monthly subscription fee including Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest II, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Champions Online, and Fallen Earth.
The game will be renamed City of Heroes Freedom, and will allow players to play for free or pay a subscription fee and become a VIP member. Free accounts will allow up to two characters, eight classes, and a maximum status of level 50. Free accounts will also be able to take part in raids and explore 45 zones.
VIP members receive everything that free players get as well as 12 character slots per server, plus slots (plus any you may have unlocked already through a purchase), 400 Paragon Points per month to use in the in-game store, access to VIP content (including the City of Heroes Going Rogue expansion content and new monthly Signature Story Arcs) for free, one free character transfer per month, priority queuing, VIP customer support, and access to a new VIP-only server.
Full details on the changes can be found on the City of Heroes Freedom page.
