Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries Product Page

June 29, 2011 -

Capcom has felt the wrath of consumers on amazon.com ticked off by its "one save" scheme in its new 3DS game Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. According to a Destructoid report, fans have "Amazon Bombed" the product page of the game on Amazon, giving the game negative reviews and leaving less than flattering comments about the game.

What set consumers off is a "one save" scheme in the game that basically only lets the original owner unlock the extras within the game. Once they are unlocked they are unlocked for good, even if the game is resold or given to someone's friend. Fans are very upset with this new way in which Capcom is trying to fight against second sales of their games.

And the user reviews are not pretty:

"I have nothing more to add that this is crippleware whose sole purpose is to erode owner rights even further," wrote one reviewer.

"I don't care how much fun this game is, or how good it looks, or how much it costs," said another user review. "There is one save slot. Save data is permanent and cannot be deleted. Capcom is attempting to set a new precedent in consumer manipulation and control with this product."

We'll let you know if Capcom backs off this new way of combating second hand game sales.

I THINK I understand what you're telling me, but that sentence doesn't make any sense.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

This is the same Capcom that brought Bionic Commando to the PC and then gave up on making PC games after "poor ratings".  Third-person shooters almost always get rated badly by people who clearly can't play them, which apparently includes reviewers - I ignore those people anyway.  I personally thought the game was good right up to the point where the enemies started saying the same things over and over, most of it a lot of pointless cussing.  The reviewers were saying the game was hard, but I found it to only be hard in exactly one spot where you had to grapple a zillion floating balls over water and the tiniest bit of water would cause the character to drown.  That part required luck - the rest of the game required skillz, which I guess I had.  It was enjoyable for the most part and, IMO, a pretty damn good first PC game for a company used to developing for consoles.

Had they stuck to developing for PC, this new game of theirs could have been patched easily over the Internet to correct this mistake.  Whoops.

Well, sad thing I was actually planning on getting this until Capcom decided to pull this stunt.

It wasn't piracy that lost them this sale, it was their own actions.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

It saves on the cartridge and your unlockables remain unlocked forever. Big whoop. This really feels like something that is being severely overblown.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

So you would be perfectly fine if, say, Nintendo released a Mario game where your first save file was the only one, and it wouldn't let you delete it to reboot if you get bored and want to unlock everything all over again?

Like with other DRM schemes, if we show we'll put up with it companies will only beginning looking at harsher measures.

We don't really have rights if said rights are "managed"

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

And if my wife wants to play the game and attempt to unlock everything herself, she can't. She would have to buy her own copy. That is stupid since we live in the same house and share a 3DS (hypothetically)

Well, I never sell my games so it doesn't hurt me. But for those that trade their games constantly or only rent, this is debilitating. Gamestop has already announced that they will not give credit for RE:M sales.

Even if Capcom had no intention to attack the used game market, this was an effective strike.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

As ESK said down below, if each person of a household wants to unlock everything on their own, they have to each get a game to do it.

And they chose the wrong reason why they couldn't implement multiple save slots or deleting your save.

Apart from the fact that, y'know, there's no actual proof that this has anything to do with second hand sales at all, beyond a few websites wanting to shoehorn it into a pre-defined, one-sided bullshit narrative.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

Considering their are no useful functions for this "feature", people are at a loss to why it was included in the game at all. So rightly they assume the worst.

It doesn't help that Capcom has been unable to communicate why this bad save "feature" is good for the consumer.

> So rightly they assume the worst.

Why is it right to assume the worst? Don't you think that's maybe a fundamantal problem with society today, assuming the worst until proven otherwise? Perhaps the legal system should switch their motto to "guilty until proven innocent" because, after all, if they don't know for sure they should assume the worst.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

Why is it right to assume the worst?

Well, aside from the fact that it's the only logical conclusion, there's also the fact that Capcom has recently backpedaled from ANOTHER anti-consumer scheme.

Like, within the past month.

Do you even read this site?

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

Actually the motto for the legal system these days is usually "Guilty until proven rich".

As for assuming the worst. After years of companies basicly competeing to see how many ways the consumer can be cheated...yeah I'll assume the worst of them. That way when I'm not surprised when they do something stupid, and pleasantly surprised when they do something right.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

Sadly yes, that is a problem with society. But it doesn't really help to qualm fears when the accused, in this case Capcom, fails to sell the feature as a positive and side steps the actual concern.

If Capcom could or would explain why they think this features is a positive for single cartridge/multiple players, people wouldn't assume the worst.

Re: Consumers Amazon Bomb Capcom's RE: The Mercenaries ...

You would think they would have learned from the other DRM schemes the blew up in their creators' faces. UbiSoft's AC2, Spore, etc. Like Stallone said in Demolition Man: "Why don't just shove a leash up my ass?"

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm

MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm

quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
