Layoffs Hit Two 2K Czech Studios

2K Czech has laid off more than 40 staff, according to a Develop report. The layoffs occurred at two studios operating under the 2K Czech brand. One group, based in Brno, has lost up to 40 developers, sources inside the company have told Develop. The other studio in Prague has laid off around 10 employees, according to insiders. Both studios employ around 200.

2K Games tells Develop that the layoffs do not mean that the company is changing the focus of the 2K Czech studio.

“Our goal to create world-class video game titles remains unchanged,” the company told Develop. In a written statement, the group confirmed that 2K Czech “has realigned its resources to streamline the development process, reduce costs and maximize studio performance”.

“This will result in the elimination of approximately 40 positions and primarily impact the 2K Czech studio in Brno. While this was a difficult decision, we believe it will benefit the studio in the long-term,” the statement read.

Originally formed as Illusion Softworks, the European studio was rebranded 2K Czech in 2008 after Take-Two acquired it. Since then it has completed work on two multiplatform projects including Mafia 2 and Top Spin 4.
