Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

September 7, 2011 -

You think? A New York Magazine article chronicles the strong dislike conservative bloggers have for a Flash game called "Tea Party Zombies Must Die." Bloggers took notice of the game created by company StarvingEyes last night and went ballistic.

The game charges players with shooting various zombie versions of politicians and Fox News contributors including Newt Gingrich, Congresswoman Michelle Bachman, Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck and The Koch Brothers. The game's description reads: "The Tea Party zombies are walking the streets of America. Grab your weapons and bash their rotten brains to bits! Destroy zombie Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck, the Koch Brothers, and many more!"

Jason Oda, the creator of the game and the head of the company, told Media Research Center TV that “The game was just a personal project. I am not worried about it effecting [sic] business." Oda created the 2008 Flash game Kung-fu election, so it's not the first time he's ever tried his hand at animated interactive political satire..

So what do Conservative bloggers think of it? NY Magazine has gathered some choice morsels from the most prominent outlets on the net.

Powerline: "It is pretty much impossible, at this point, to tell where the respectable left ends and the cesspool left begins; or, more accurately, whether a respectable left exists at all."

Glenn Beck's website Hot Air: "I tried to get worked up about it, truly, knowing full well there’d be urine puddles on the floor all over Media Matters HQ had some conservative programmer done a version of this involving union leaders or whatever. But then I saw the Fox News/Glenn Beck zombies. It’s simply too silly to be threatening.

The game does call to mind the infamous Sarah Palin target map, which included Representative Gabrielle Giffords, and the more recent Arizona Glock giveaway — the key difference, of course, being the complicitness of elected officials. Dumb and tasteless? Sure. But at least the game was not signed off on by a professional politician.
"

National Review: "I can feel wave after wave of New Tone washing over me."

Sonoran Alliance: "Zombies or not, the reality of the situation is that liberal Democrats don’t play by the same rules for society. ... Yes, it is free expression protected under the Constitution and conservatives should defend it with every ounce of energy. But Wow! Is it ever in bad taste and dripping with hypocrisy."

You can form your own opinions about the game by playing it here. Fox News offers an additional report on the story here. There's plenty of outrage in that article too.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

If this was a game about shooting popular liberal news anchors, the liberals would be going on a witch hunt. They would say the game creators should be arrested. They would say that gun rights should be taken away because our society is becoming too violent. There would be outrage. It would be the lead story on every network news channel. But, it's okay to have a game in which you hunt down popular conservative figures. It's okay for liberals to promote violence against their opponents.

What's hilarious is that liberals go on and on about the slanted nature of Fox News. Why does it bother you so much that there is ONE conservative-leaning news network when every single other cable news and network news network is liberal leaning?

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

So, did you practice long to attain this level of necromancer? Raising a 5 months old thread from the dead, that's not nothing.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

I would really like to see the makers of these games send engraved thank you cards to the prominent people who condemn the game.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

"It’s simply too silly to be threatening."

Noooooo! Really? REALLY?!

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

Wait... why is this dripping in hypocrisy...

Or are they just using this against the left in general... which I doubt the creator of this stands for...

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

You mean besides some of these people being shown burning effigies of the president as well as wishing his wife be made a widow and his children made orphans, and at least one incident I saw encouraging their kids to draw the president in a sniper scope?

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

Well if that one gentleman would kindly point to these rules of society....

Still, what I saw is pretty much what I expected.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

Outraged? Most of the comments quoted in the article don't sound very outraged.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

Hush, you're interfering with the editor's efforts to cast conservatives as raving lunatics.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

Half way trough the game the second amendment is repealed and you have to defend yourself with a rolled up over priced government manual written on the subject of defending yourself from zombies. Out of date because the first recommendation is get a gun.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

LOL! Ok, I have to admit I liked that.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

I just finished it and I never saw anything like that.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

That was just a little political joke.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

Fair enough. And I was surprised, it's a lot tamer than I feared it'd be, all things considered.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

I like how they treat it as though it wasn't made by some no-name developer and that it represents the official stance of liberals.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

Yeah, I'm sure liberals all over the place and in the media are going to denounce this game like crazy. Or maybe they'll let it slide by pointing out that it's not made by major game developer and have the perspective it is inconsequential.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

I love how all these guys just used it as another opportunity to get their message out there about how the left is evil. Stay classy guys, stay classy.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

And this after they've spent the last couple of years using all sorts of pro-gun imagery against liberals - referring to targets, taking back the government at gunpoint and so on.

That is, until somebody went and tried to assassinate Rep. Giffords. Then they took no responsibility for their words; it was all somebody else's fault.

They never had any class.

Re: Tea Party Zombies Must Die Not Popular With Conservatives

To be fair that guy was a mentally broken person who was taking a drug that can shock the foundations of even well adjusted people. I don't think anybody could have seen that coming. Even though I feel ALL the blame belongs to him it would be irresponsibly for republicans not to be more sensitive of their rhetoric after the fact which I don't think they did a very good job of doing. They were more worried about redirection. Just my two cents.

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm

Matthew Wilsonthe sad thing is there are trolls on both sides of this. people need to stop acting like their side is so pure.10/18/2014 - 12:19pm
MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
Matthew Wilsonwhile he focused on gg, he did call out both sides crap.10/17/2014 - 7:18pm
Papa MidnightThat was a damn good read offered by Jeff Gertsmann.10/17/2014 - 7:17pm
