Sony confirmed today that its next hand-held device, the PlayStation Vita will be region free - meaning that software bought in other areas - like Europe or Japan - will be playable on the units sold in North America. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed it via his Twitter feed, saying, "Yes, it is," - in response to a follower's question.
It also means that the Vita could be imported by gamers outside of Japan when it launches in the region on December 17. Of course, Sony discourages this idea.
"I personally do not recommend that," Yoshida said.
"Sorry, I'm not explaining well, but from my experiences owning both US and J game consoles of everything, there tend to be minor nuisances," he added.
The 4GB PS Vita will cost 2,200yen ($29/£18), the 8GB will be 3,200yen ($42/£27), the 16GB will cost 5,500yen ($72/£46), and the 32GB will be 9,500yen ($124/£79). PS Vita will be launched in North America and Europe in the first quarter of 2012, though an exact date has not been announced.
