Nintendo Posts Half-Year Loss of $927 Million

October 27, 2011

Nintendo has released its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending September 30, reporting a massive loss. The company posted a loss of 70.29 billion yen ($927 million USD) for the first six months of the fiscal year. As a result, the company has dramatically revised its projected revenue for the full year. The company now says that it will generate 790 billion yen ($10.4 billion USD) in net sales, a change from the 900 billion yen ($11.9 billion) it expected in an earlier forecast. The company also adjusted its operating income projections from 35 billion yen ($462 million USD) to 1 billion yen ($13 million USD).

Nintendo attributes this shift in revenue to declining hardware and software sales, price reduction and the strength of the Yen against the Euro and the U.S. dollar. The company also announced that life-to-date worldwide sales of its 3DS have hit the 6.68 million units mark, with sales expected to increase during the holiday season along with decent sales of software titles such as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.

Nintendo's the Wii has sold through 89.36 million units to-date. The DS has sold 149 million to-date.

Re: Nintendo Posts Half-Year Loss of $927 Million

I knew things weren't looking good for Nintendo when their payroll services announced in July that the CEO was taking a 50% pay cut.  The board of directors also took cuts at that time, I'm not sure what all of the cuts totalled.  I think they were hoping that the 3DS was going to make a bigger impact that it actually did.

It's funny (Gamefaqs pointed this out) that Toyota posted a bigger loss than this, also blamed on the strong Yen and no one barking that Toyota needs to make parts for GM or Volkswagon.

Nintendo's the Wii

The electronic system game videos arent selling as well for the people that make the nintendoboycube. Probably too much competition from facespace and myPhone

Re: Nintendo Posts Half-Year Loss of $927 Million

It's not the end of Nintendo, but it looks like trouble for Iwata. He seems to be nice and you'd think that if a guy loses 1.5 billion after making over 100 billion then he'd be allowed to make a couple mistakes, but there's a little more to it than that. Still, I hope the shareholders don't throw him out over it.

The Wii is sort of an artificial success. Sure, Nintendo sold a lot of Wii Sports, but in the process learned that software doesn't sell to casuals. The reason almost the entire industry tries to appeal to the hardcore crowd is because they are LOYAL. Yeah, they tend to be asshats and act like they're entitled, but part of the reason they do that is because they care, because they plan to buy software for their entire lives. Casual gamers are just that and thus too fleeting of an audience to be a reliable source of income. Nintendo's realization of this is probably why they shot themselves in the foot by rushing the 3DS and Wii-U.

There's always been something astoundingly backwards about Nintendo's strategies and in a way they're still plagued by the problems they had when the original Playstation took over the scene. Little by little though, they seem to be catching on. Hopefully they can finish this generation with the Wii having been seen as sort of a stall tactic that got them rich enough to make the console they were supposed to make a long time ago. The Wii is also sort of a happy accident in that it's helped developers discover the right amount of motion control to include in a game. In contrast, Microsoft's Kinect takes the concept of motion control way too far.

I especially love how the internets are all abuzz about this being the "end of Nintendo".  Just like how Nintendo was supposed to be "dying" since 1995...  Nothing changes.

Re: Nintendo Posts Half-Year Loss of $927 Million

Yeah. The rhetoric is nuts. "Oh no! Nintendo lost a billion and a half dollars after making 100s of billions for the last 6 years."

Re: Nintendo Posts Half-Year Loss of $927 Million

We'll know Nintendo is finished when they start releasing games for the i-devices and Androids.
