Modern Warfare 3 sells 6.5 million on Day One in US, UK

November 11, 2011

Modern Warfare 3's day one sales - based on Chart Track and retailer figures - are right around 6.5 million units in the US and UK, raising an estimated $400 million in revenues for Activision. These numbers make Modern Warfare 3 the biggest entertainment launch of all time, beating the previous record held by Call of Duty: Black Ops which had an estimated day one revenue total of $360 million. Of course, this comes as no shock to Activision, whose last two Call of Duty games broke sales milestones in their first day of release as well.

"We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories," said Bobby Kotick.

"Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for 'Star Wars' and 'Lord of the Rings,' two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

Activision also revealed that it has donated a further $3 million to the Call of Duty Endowment which Kotick set up in 2009, bringing the total to $5 million. The fund was created to provide training and employment to veterans of the US armed forces.
