If you wanted to avoid using Origin to update Battlefield 3, you can forget about that. Electronic Arts, responding to an inquiry about it from Aus Gamers said that stand-alone update files will not be released and the only way to update the game is through its Origin platform. This makes sense given that much of EA's falling out with Steam was over having more control of deploying updates and content directly to customers.
On the other hand, gamers wanted updates for the game to be released as stand-alone downloads so that they could be made available at mirrors all over the world. This is particularly problematic with larger patches such as the freshly released Battlefield 3 update that weighs in at 3.6GB...
Like it or not, Battlefield 3 PC users have no choice but to use Origin because henceforth and forever more for the life of the game it is the only way to keep it up to date.

Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
I've been a fanatic follower of the series since the very beginning...
Played BF1942 in a clan for 5 years...
Loved Bad Company 2... Though, pre-ordered, I never got to play it until 5-6 months later when the server-load lessened... (...and I didn't get kicked out like a common criminal by the "No connection to master server")
Currently, EA has not only managed to completely lose my confidence... But it is a sport for me now, to see how many sales I can ruin for EA. A constant slander mission where I know that every person I "convert", will keep doing the same...
Sorry DICE, I do love you guys... but please... You gotta ditch EA!
I know it's good to know the paycheck is secure, but is it really worth turning your company into the McD of the gaming industry? I thought the Swedish people had more integrity than that.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
Every time I read some piece of news regarding Battlefield 3 and/or Origin, I get happier that I didn't buy that POS and I didn't install that spyware travesty.
EA and DICE have lost what little sense they had. They have forgotten who they work for, and how to treat customers. Shame on those giving them money knowing what they're doing.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
The problem isnt in the patching process. Its how both companies handle their PR in regards to DRM. Valve realized that the key to handling DRM is to be honest about the presence of DRM ,make sure that it never punishes legit customers, and to provide a service that the gives customers incentives to use their DRM methods. In other words, they understand that they need customers more than customers need them. EA on the other hand, has a history of telling customers that theres no DRM in their software when there obviously is. In fact I recall one customer was banned from Dragon Age 2 because they complained on the EA forums about the DRM.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
I love Steam, but why is it OK for Steam to have complete control of their patch process, but when EA tries to do it it's suddenly some sort of travesty?
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
They don't. You can patch Steam games with standalone patches, although usually you'll need Steam to fix the executable to make it "Steam comformant" or whatever.
EA's falling out with Valve was because EA's games would sell DLC inside the game without giving a cut to Steam, not because of the patches.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
Origin? I've never seen a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. I'll never use it and if that means no BF3 then I won't play BF3. God knows there are plenty of other games to play.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
Now I'm even happier I saved my money for Modern Warfare 3.

Another good reason to never buy Battlefield 3.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
Not that I was ever going to play BF3, but if this is what they're going to do for all their games going forward, then they can fuck right off. I'll never buy one of their games again. Look, EA. I know you want Origin to take off and all that, but seriously. You don't have the trust or respect Valve/Steam does, and you can't get away with pulling shit like this. By keeping your games off Steam, you are not stealing me away from Valve. You are losing me as a customer.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
Well guess what EA, I'll be tryign out Call of Duty then, and NEVER trying out Battlefield.
Re: EA: No Stand-Alone Updates for Battlefield 3. Ever.
Welp, glad I don't play BF3 and have no intention of ever playing it.
