SOPA Supporter IP’s Outed as Pirates on YouHaveDownloaded.com Database

As members of Congress fight amongst themselves about SOPA in committee today, one site is outing proponents of the bill for illegally downloading copyrighted material. This is according to YouHaveDownloaded.com, which tracks IP addresses that use BitTorrent sites.  With those IP addresses in hand, the site then matches them with a list of files that have been downloaded.

Logging into YouHaveDownloaded.com will cause a quick cross-check of your IP with the site’s database of pirated downloads and show you your download history. The site can also look up other IP addresses, torrent hashes or specific files. The site has a database of nearly 54 million IP addresses, more than 118,000 torrents and more than 2 million files.

YouHaveDownloaded.com has captured evidence that IP addresses coming from Sony Pictures, Universal and Fox have been illegally downloading content.

An IP address in the U.S. Sony Pictures address range reportedly downloaded music and the Conan the Barbarian film, while an IP from US Universal was allegedly caught downloading Cowboys and Aliens and the first season of the HBO show Game of Thrones. A US Fox IP address was also allegedly caught downloading the J.J. Abrams film Super 8.

Even French President Nicholas Sarkozy's residence, who has supported a three-strikes rule in the country, has been caught on the site for illegal downloads.

YouHaveDownloaded.com only tracks around 20 percent of public downloads and doesn’t keep track of dynamic IP addresses. The site doesn’t keep track of personal details.
