Android App Helps You Boycott Products Made by SOPA Supporters

January 10, 2012 -

Those that prefer a little activism in their free Android apps will enjoy the new Boycott SOPA app, which enables users to scan barcodes on products and determine if the manufacturer supports SOPA. The App works exactly like any other app that allows you to scan a barcode - but instead it tells you which ones support SOPA, and therefore, which ones you shouldn't buy.

After scanning a barcode, the Boycott SOPA gives you a big red cross if the product is distributed by a SOPA supporter, or a green checkmark if it’s “clean.” The app works with most products such as books, movies, music, and even food.

It's an interesting idea, and a way for consumers who don't like SOPA to send a message to those who support it, particularly companies that are members of the ESA, RIAA, and MPAA. Of course, you should take into account those companies that have been decent enough to declare no position or opposition to the bill in its current form - like Epic Games, as an example. At least some companies and groups have the guts to talk about the issue in public and that means a lot.
