Congressmen Paul Ryan Opposes SOPA, Promises to Vote Against It

January 10, 2012 -

Wisconsin Republican Congressman Paul Ryan issued a short statement today on his official House website announcing that he strongly opposes the Stop Online Piracy Act and says that if it comes up for a vote on the floor of the House he will vote against it. While some credit a campaign on Reddit to oppose him in his upcoming election bid by supporting his Democratic opponent (which more than likely did have some affect on his decision), chances are he also got an earful from constituents that hate the bill sponsored by Lamar Smith (R-Texas). Here is what Ryan said on his website today:

"The internet is one of the most magnificent expressions of freedom and free enterprise in history. It should stay that way. While H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act, attempts to address a legitimate problem, I believe it creates the precedent and possibility for undue regulation, censorship and legal abuse. I do not support H.R. 3261 in its current form and will oppose the legislation should it come before the full House."

Whatever the reasons for Paul's official statement today, we commend him for his change of heart and appreciate his support of free speech on the Internet.

Re: Congressmen Paul Ryan Opposes SOPA, Promises to Vote ...

I would never vote republican.  But if I did it would be for Ron Paul.  It would really pain me if he  somehow would win the republican nomination.  It would be the republican I like the most (as much as I can like a republican) against the democrat I despise the most.  I would still vote for Obama in the end.  I just can't feel I can trust a republican.

Especially his "Deregulate everything" stance I keep hearing about.

And somewhere a lobbyist is trying to come up with how much he needs to get Ryan to change his opinion.

Re: Congressmen Paul Ryan Opposes SOPA, Promises to Vote ...

Doubt Ryan will change his opinion. His state is literally up-in-arms right now and I'm sure he'll turn into Stretch Armstrong to please any group he can in order to stay in congress. This is not about principle, this is simply about staying in congress.
