A man from Greece, New York (a suburb of Rochester) has been sentenced to six months in jail, ten years of probation and registration as a sex offender in New York State. Twenty-year-old Richard "Ricky" Kretovic pled guilty to the crime of Criminal Sexual Act in March of this year as part of a plea deal and on Friday Monroe County Court Judge Victoria Argento delivered his sentence.
The charges stem from Kretovic's sexual encounters with a 12-year-old boy who he met online while playing games on Xbox Live. Greece Police investigated the crime after being contacted by the young boy's parents. The investigation led police to come to the conclusion that Kretovic had met the boy online, initiated face-to-face meetings with the boy at his home, and then had multiple sexual encounters in the basement of his home.
"Operation: Game Over in fact took on an added urgency after a recent event in Greece, New York…" A.G. Schneiderman said at a press conference in New York City last month. The agreement signed by Microsoft, Sony and other companies involved the removal of all registered sex offenders in the State of New York from the online databases of these gaming systems.
A complication for prosecutors might be that Kretovic has Asperger’s.
"Chronologically he's 19, academically he is way beyond his years, but socially and emotionally he's about ten, eleven years old," Kretovic’s mother Karen said in an exclusive interview with 13WHAM News in April.
A spokeswoman for A.G. Schneiderman had no comment when asked if the office was aware of Kretovic’s Asperger’s.
His mother, along with a social worker familiar with his case pled with the courts not to give Kretovic any jail time due to his condition. This would explain why his sentence is as short as it is.
