Minecraft Creator Lashes Out at Microsoft Again over Windows 8

September 27, 2012 -

Mojang co-founder and Minecraft creator Markus Persson continues to voice disdain for Windows 8 because of its walled garden approach to gaming by instituting a closed marketplace for software. Persson took to Twitter today to complain about Microsoft after the platform holder asked his company to submit Minecraft for certification under Windows 8. Instead of cooperating with them, he took to Twitter with the following message:

"Got an email from Microsoft wanting to help 'certify' Minecraft for Windows 8. I told them to stop trying to ruin the PC as an open platform."

In a follow-up Tweet he continued to assail Windows 8 and Microsoft:

"I'd rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along. Maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to win 8 that way.."

Persson is not the only one that has expressed disdain for how Windows 8 handles third-party software. Valve co-founder Gabe Newell called Windows 8 a "catastrophe" for game developers and hinted that maybe Linux should be the future focus of the company...

Re: Minecraft Creator Lashes Out at Microsoft Again over ...

The fact that Microsoft is leading developers to actually forsake Windows 8 support is incredibly pathetic. But eh, what'd you expect? Wait until Windows 9, because that'll probably be really awesome (and then whatever comes after that will suck).

How the hell would a java-application that does not require installation require certification under windows?!

Re: Minecraft Creator Lashes Out at Microsoft Again over ...

Only certified apps are allowed to have blocks/blobs/panels/ whatever the crap those rectangular things are on the Metro UI. Otherwise, you have to manually switch to desktop mode any and every time you want to launch an unsigned app.

Maybe he needs to certify Java first?

Or maybe the people at Microsoft doing certifications are generally clueless about popular video games.  Which means they probably shouldn't be certifying anything in the first place.
