Poll: Will Sony and Microsoft’s Next Consoles Have Touch Screen Controllers?

January 9, 2013 -

Life is filled with uncertainty but there remain various bits and bobs you can count on: death, taxes, and the fact that I'll pass out if I don't get something to eat soon.

Another certainty on which you can hang your hat is the introduction of new consoles from Sony and Microsoft in the near future.  Nintendo is the first out of the gate with its dumbly named Wii U and is eager to convince the world that like motion control before it, a touch screen is a vital component of modern controllers.

Do you think Sony and Microsoft will agree?  When they finally get around to announcing their PS3 and 360 successors, will the controllers feature touch screens?  Maybe you're thinking, "Why would they bother?  Sony could use the Vita as a touch screen controller and Microsoft has that SmartGlass thing?"  Whatever your thoughts, no matter how impure, vote in the poll and then litter the comments section of this very article with your predictions.

"But Andrew!" I hear you say.  "I'm allergic to comment sections but I nonetheless feel compelled to share my opinion.  What can I do?"

Take heart, dear reader for you can also send us email at SuperPACPodcast@gmail.com.

"But Andrew!" you continue.  "Where can I see the results of the poll?"

Another fine question, dear reader.  The poll results will be revealed on the next episode of Super Podcast Action Committee.  Look for it early next week.

"But Andrew!" you conclude.  "Didn't you say you'd pass out if you didn't get something to eat soon?  This article's been going on for quite a while."

Re: Poll: Will Sony and Microsoft’s Next Consoles Have Touch ...

The rumor is that Xbox will have some form of augmented reality glasses.  But that sounds like BS to me.  Doesn't seem wise to make peripherals that are too expensive to replace.  I have enough trouble justifying $40 on a new controller.

The poll is pointless because it asks an opinion about something that is completely hearsay.

Not gonna bother with the poll because there is no option for uncertainty.

Re: Poll: Will Sony and Microsoft’s Next Consoles Have Touch ...

I vote no simply because it will make the system too expensive. The main reason the Wii U is not as powerful as some would expect is to keep the price down. They may release a premium game pad later but not at launch.

A premium pad?  What would that do?  How would it be different from the current pad?

None initially, they'll wait a year from release to see where the Wii U is in comparison to them. If the Wii U outpaces them like the Wii did, they'll cobble together their takes. Sony's will be dubiously similar to the terms their marketers used to poke fun at the Wii U shortly after the PS4 launches (similar to them calling the Wii remotes lollipops and then putting a round candy colored tip on theirs).

^ This

I still have hilarious memories of Sony coming out and saying nobody wants motion-sensitive gaming with a remote-like lollipop, and then a couple of months later starting design of their own...

Microsoft likely won't do anything until they see where the winds are blowing either, but they won't (hopefully) make themselves out to be utter idiots by saying they hate it and contradicting themselves later.
