Ouya announced that its $99 Android based console of the same name will begin shipping to backers of its Kickstarter crowd funding campaign on March 28. Consumers who were not involved in early funding will have to wait until June when the system hits retailers like Best Buy, GameStop, and Amazon, among others.
"OUYAs will begin shipping to Kickstarter backers on March 28," a post confirmed on the Ouya website. "That’s right. Parts are in the factory and assembly lines are buzzing. We’ll gradually ramp up production as we make sure things are working. (Our full launch is still set for June, which is when OUYA will be available in stores!)"
Those who backed the Kickstarter are told to keep a lookout for an email from the company that contains a tracking number and an estimated delivery date and that getting all the shipments out to everyone "might take a few weeks."
The company also said games are in the works from Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Quantum Conundrum creator Kim Swift and Airtight Games; Papo & Yo developer Minority Media; and Killing Floor and Red Orchestra 2 Tripwire Interactive - who will port The Ball to the system. Developer nWay will bring its new action-RPG to the system as well. Some interesting games are also on the way from those who participated in the 10-day game jam sponsored by Ouya and Kill Screen called CREATE.
Finally, Ouya announced that Kellee Santiago has joined the company. She is better known as the co-founder of thatgamecompany (the maker of Journey) and a partner at Indie Fund. She will handle developer relations for the company. Santiago Tweeted about the new job earlier today:
