Diablo 3 for Consoles Will Not Require a Constant Internet Connection, Will Not Include Auction House

March 25, 2013 -

When Diablo 3 lands on the PS3 and PS4 it won't have some of the features or the requirements that its PC counterpart currently has. According to Polygon, a Blizzard official told them at PAX East this weekend that Diablo 3 will not require a constant internet connection in order to play.

While that's good news for PS3 and PS4 players, the bad news is that they will not have access to the online auction system for buying and selling in-game items either. There will be a way to trade items with other players, but the details on that are "to be announced."

"Players can trade (whether offline or online) using an in-game menu," a spokesperson told Polygon. "They just need to be playing in the same game. We should have more details soon."

The Blizzard spokesperson also said that there are currently no plans to add gamepad support for the computer version of Diablo 3.

A release date for the console version of the game has not been announced. When asked if Blizzard had plans to bring the game to any other console platforms, the spokesperson declined comment.

Re: Diablo 3 for Consoles Will Not Require a Constant ...

I guess it's sometimes hard to win. They release it on PC as always-on and with a ridiculous auction house. Then they take that garbage out but put it on a platform where I can't enjoy the mouse and keyboard. I guess Diablo 3 still falls under the heading 'Meh'.

So...  They can compromise their artistic vision for consoles, just not for PC?  ;)

No auction house?  Okay, so here's the big question: Why?

If I were to guess, I'd say it's because Bliz fears that if it's not always-online, people would find ways to cheat while offline (by editing save files, for instance), and thus ruin the AH economy. That's just a guess though, and the logic there isn't perfect.

Re: Diablo 3 for Consoles Will Not Require a Constant ...

Works for me, ditch the auction house, or tighten up the other parts of its security as pointed out by Andrew.

But always on has yet to prove its value to the CONSUMERS, and only shows promise for the companies.  Sadly they don't see that its also killing them in many ways.

Then don't allow offline characters to participate in the auction house.

Simple problem, simple solution.

Re: Diablo 3 for Consoles Will Not Require a Constant ...

But they could have done that with D3 for PC in the first place, yet chose not to. The fact that they didn't/won't is the reason I'll never own the game for PC.

Either way, I just don't expect them to ever give us the honest 'why' of this particular decision, but it does seem that like so many other companies these days, Blizzard just makes a bunch of ass-backwards choices with their games. Instead of making something everything wants, they insist on giving us something nobody wants.
