TeamPixel Fails to Secure Homeworld IP, Refunds Money to Kickstarter Backers

April 19, 2013 -

The effort to crowd source the purchase of the Homeworld series from THQ has failed after the sponsor of the campaign - developer TeamPixel - learned that the license has been bought by someone else. The campaign began in January on Kickstarter, with TeamPixel promising to secure the license and make Homeworld 3 for PC, Mac and Linux, and Homeworld Touch for iOS and Android. But someone else now owns the license, according to an update on the Kickstarter page:

"The auction for the Homeworld license ended April 15 2013, and while we reached qualified bidder status for the bankruptcy auction, we were unable to raise the necessary funds to remain competitive against the other parties at the auction," wrote the studio in a Kickstarter update.

The studio said that it is giving refunds to backers of the campaign. The new owner of the Homeworld IP is unknown at this time, but TeamPixel said that it expects an announcement during May after the sale is finalized.

The real-time space strategy series was originally created by Relic. The former THQ studio was purchased by Sega in January for $26.6 million after THQ auctioned off its assets.

Relic is currently working on the WWII-themed RTS Company of Heroes 2, which will be released for PC on June 25.
