Ultimate Poker is the First Official Legal Online Gambling Site in the U.S.

April 30, 2013 -

Ultimate Poker is the first online game to use real-world money in the United States. Of course players who want to take it for a spin will have to be physically located in the state where this game is legal to play: Nevada. Sometime today UltimatePoker.com is expected to launch the country’s first official fully legal online poker site where players can wager real-world money for the very first time.

"This is an important day for the gaming industry," Ultimate Poker Chairman Tom Breitling said Monday. "We’re the first, not only in Nevada but in America, to offer real money poker in a regulated environment."

"Nevada is now the first state to accept legal, regulated interactive wagers," A.G. Burnett, the chair of the Nevada State Gaming Control Board, told Ars Technica earlier today. "It's a big day and I'm proud of the state."

Earlier this year, Nevada's governor signed an online gambling law, with New Jersey and Delaware following suit. Nevertheless, Nevada is the first to go live with an authorized online gambling site. The law also allows for states that have laws permitting online gambling to engage in compacts, or agreements with one another, which could ultimately create a coalition of states where online gambling is permitted. For now, Nevada’s laws only specifically authorize online poker, while New Jersey and Delaware include a variety of casino games, including poker.

Re: Ultimate Poker is the First Official Legal Online ...

I've never understood why gambling was illegal.

Of course, I've never understood why prostitution was illegal.

And I've always been somewhat perplexed that boxing/MMA is legal.

Same. By making it illegal you make it underground, and when underground it's decidedly a LOT less safe, while when legal it brings in regulations that tend to keep proprietors and patrons safe.
