Kojima Says MGS 5's 'Quiet' Was Getting a 'Sexy' Makeover, Not an 'Erotic' One

September 6, 2013 - GamePolitics Staff

At a Konami press conference today, Polygon asked Hideo Kojima about his Twitter comments that he wanted to make the Metal Gear Solid 5 character Quiet more "erotic" so that people attending the Tokyo Game Show later this month would cosplay her. He said that he had directed designer Yoji Shinkawa to make that happen and then posted a picture (to your left).

Today during a Q&A session with Kojima, designer Yoji Shinkawa, and model Stefanie Joosten (her face, voice, and motion capture was used to create the character), Polygon's Michael McWhertor asked the panel why they thought this was necessary to make Quiet "more erotic" and how Joosten felt about the appearance of her character in-game.

"Maybe the phrase 'erotic' wasn't really [the correct word for] what I was trying to say," Kojima said through a translator. "What I'm really trying to do is create unique characters. One of those is, of course, Quiet. She's a really unique character, I wanted to add that sexiness to her. It wasn't really supposed to be erotic, but sexy."

"From my perspective, it's not just the characters, but often I look at a weapon or a vehicle and think 'That's really sexy,'" Shinkawa said. "It's not just the characters, but the mechs and weapons [as well.]"

"You're going to notice [when you play,] but there's limited dialogue with the [Metal Gear Solid 5], and for that reason we really want to show the characteristic from each character," Kojima added. "Sexy could be for guys, weapons, vehicles, it's really that characteristic."

"Of course, I was surprised to see Quiet's outfit at first," said Joosten. "But, you know, it fits in the Metal Gear universe, I think. I don't think I'm allowed to say a lot about this, but, well, Mr. Kojima has his reasons for deciding why Quiet [is] wearing what she's wearing."

We're not really sure that Kojima did a very good job of clarifying his earlier comments on Twitter. Is there a difference between "sexy" and "erotic" ? Perhaps he needs a better translator?

Re: Kojima Says MGS 5's 'Quiet' Was Getting a 'Sexy' ...

I kinda see what he is getting at with the linguistic issue, but I do not think it really changes anything.    I do not think were really responding to his specific choice of adjectives, but to the larger pattern he is displaying.. well.. that and the cosplayer/figurine thing.

Re: Kojima Says MGS 5's 'Quiet' Was Getting a 'Sexy' ...

In the end, its still not much of a difference....

Just semantics when its put to that kind of word play.

Re: Kojima Says MGS 5's 'Quiet' Was Getting a 'Sexy' ...

Not exactly. Making her "sexy" can be done by something as simple as giving her an eyepatch.

Re: Kojima Says MGS 5's 'Quiet' Was Getting a 'Sexy' ...

In the broad spectrum then ANYTHING can be "sexy"

in the sense he's used it, erotic and sexy aren't far enough apart to be really seperated.
