SOE To Shut Down Four MMOs

January 27, 2014 - GamePolitics Stafff

Sony Online Entertainment will shut down four MMOs in the next few months. The first two games to be shut down will be Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures and Free Realms, which are scheduled to go dark March 31. Wizardry Online and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will also be shut down, but much later in the year - July 31.

Speaking specifically about Free Realms - which is available on both PS3 and PC, - SOE said that the game had reached its lifecycle:

"In a nutshell, the game has reached a stage in its life cycle where players are growing up and moving on to other games," the company said. "We will share details on the upcoming activities and sunset soon, but we wanted to give you plenty of notice so you can truly enjoy your remaining time left in the game."

SOE said that declining player population numbers were the reason for the other games shutting down.

SOE said that Wizardry Online and Vanguard members will have their accounts upgraded to SOE's new All Access membership.

"Under this new All Access plan, you will be able to continue to enjoy membership benefits in [these games] until [they sunset], in addition to having top tier access in SOE's other membership games," explained the firm.

Re: SOE To Shut Down Four MMOs

In a perfect world the client and server source code would be made open source and fans who care enough could keep their progress alive.

(I would be running a City of Heroes server right now.)

Whoever dies with the most unplayed Steam games wins!

Re: SOE To Shut Down Four MMOs

TBH surprised they aren't waiting until AFTER they have the all access pass back.. A lot of people TMK were considering going too or trying out, Vanguard when the new pass came out..

Kind of stupid not to F2P them and add'em to the roster though.

Re: SOE To Shut Down Four MMOs

Free Realms and Wizardry were already F2P. I think the Star Wars game was too. I don't know about Vanguard. If they're already not making money, then throwing them on the pass won't change that.

I don't think you'd be missing much with Vanguard anyway, since the design philosophy was basically "man, EQ's great with all these 30 hour camping grindfests, but what it really needs is even more tedium."

Re: SOE To Shut Down Four MMOs

Vanguard had gone free2play a while ago, but it has to compete with both EQ and EQ2 along with upcoming EQnext, I'm pretty sure Sony finally said, no thanks.  I'm not even sure how Wizardy was actually released, that game didn't really have much as far as wow factor (at least for me) and I was really surprised that Sony let it pass into release.
