UK Mother Claims Son Charged £4K in FIFA 14 DLC To Her Card, Blames EA

February 26, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

Just for fun, check out this audio interview from the BBC featuring a mother who claims that her 13-year-old son racked up a £4,000 bill on FIFA 14 by buying "Player Packs." He apparently spent £1,000 of that on DLC in 24 hours, according what his mom tells the BBC.

You can check it out here.

EA declined to comment on the story.

The boy's mother, known only as "Sue," told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "There should be more controls in place to ensure the cardholder or adult is aware of what's happening."

Of course this is a lesson in unfettered access to credit cards and not using parental controls (assuming this was done on a console)...

Also it's curious that her credit card company didn't contact her when such a large purchase was made in a 24-hour period...

Yeah, only a company like EA would ever have a game with over £4,000 worth of DLC in the first place. I wonder if the son knew exactly what he was doing or it was not clear that he was paying for something (much like the controversy with certain iOS games that tricked someone into pressing a button that caused an instant charge to the account owner's account) .

EA isn't the only company to have $4,000 in DLC

Sell the kids console.  That'll teach him not to do it again.

It's also curious that there's £4,000 worth of DLC available.

Seriously, is there even that much in DLC available?

Re: UK Mother Claims Son Charged £4K in FIFA 14 DLC To Her ...

If you buy it over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, yeah.

Seriously, you'd have to make over 2,000 individual purchases to rack up a bill that high.

You can buy DLC repeatedly like that?

Edit: I don't know about other platforms but you can't buy XBOX 360 stuff repeatedly. Once it's bought it can be downloaded again for free. So if I buy Minecraft XBOX 360 version and delete it, I can download it again without having to pay. Also who has £4,000 worth of DLC? I looked it up and £4,000 translate to $6673.60 USD. Can you repurchase DLC on other consoles like that? The more I think about it, the more this claim of hers doesn't make any sense.

I guess.  The DLC seems to be "more slots to do stuff with".

Starving for MORE TEAMS? Get the Teams Pack to expand your Creation Centre experience! By getting the Teams Pack you will be entitled to:
- Additional 50 team creation slots on the website.
- Additional 24 team download slots.
- Ability to upload a custom team logo to all the teams you create on the website.

I guess if 50 new slots isn't enough, you can buy 50 more.

Honestly, I could have this all wrong.  I'm just trying to figure out how the hell Junior racked up over $6k American in DLC purchases unless his mom is fibbing.

Here's Origin's page for FIFA 14.  It's what I've been going by.

Yeah. I really think she's fibbing. From what I saw, they'll nickel and dime you to death. However, not to the tune of 6K.

"There should be more controls in place to ensure the cardholder or adult is aware of what's happening."

If the consoles are anything like my phone or tablet, I'd imagine there are these magical controls which disable the purchasing of in-game items with real monies unless you jump through some hoops or something. So I'd imagine she's got at least part of the blame for not looking into such things when the parent of a kid.

On the other hand, I also agree somewhat in that EA has a [minor] piece of blame here too. Judging by what I've googled on these 'player packs', it's outright insane that they'd sell things like "Gold Rare Players" which are outright better than the standard players in the default game. It's the exact same thing basically as selling a CoD player a nuke just so he/she can beat a fellow player with a 9mm handgun. They've gotten outright greedy as hell with their sports game stuff lately...
