EA's Origin Ditching Physical Disc Game Sales Beginning April 4

March 31, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

EA's Origin digital distribution platform will soon ditch physical media and will only sell digital media after April 4. Prior to this change consumers could buy both physical disc-based and digital versions of games through Origin. After April 4, they will only be able to buy games that can be downloaded.

"What does this mean for you? If you're among 99 per cent of our users, absolutely nothing," Origin wrote on its website. "Your shopping experience hasn't changed one single bit."

"But if you're that 1 per cent who still desires a physical collection, we want to let you know that Origin won't be able to fulfill that need beginning April 4th. We'll still be here when you transition your gaming habits to the wonders of digital downloads."

"Digital is fast and convenient. Origin's focus is to give gamers the best experience, and going all-digital will make that possible."

Clearly physical disc-based games weren't selling all that well through Origin or EA would not be abandoning them...

This would be because 99% of their users only use it for the only 3 notable games that it has. Battlefield 3, 4, and titanfall.

The rest of its use is only registered keys from other formats into it as backup free copies.

I do actually have one additional reason for Origin, modding Spore. The steam release of spore is really bugged for mods, where as the Origin release isn't. That and the robot parts actually work with it last checked.

Well, hopefully they'll first fix the download size issues like they had with Titanfall, where it was a 50 gig download due to it containing every single languages' audio.

As much fun as it is to hate on EA and Origin, the file size problem is the game developers' fault for bundling all the languages together when you really only need one and for making the audio uncompressed to boot. The distribution platform has nothing to do with this.

Re: EA's Origin Ditching Physical Disc Game Sales Beginning ...

Considering EA is the publisher, they do hold some responsibility for it. Plus they could of setup the distribution to only download one language instead of all of them together in one pack.
